I think Microsoft don't seem to want the pro market as well though, so I dont think there will be much push.

I think the big thing though is that Personal computers (Macs and Windows) are slowly dying in general. Eventually, our phones will replace them but I think we have a while before that will happen.

Also I don't think Apple is really changing a whole lot on their OS upgrades, so I don't see the huge compatibility problems.

I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks after a 6 months or so and didn't have any issues.

At the same time as computers get faster and have more memory, managing Audio will become more easier and ultimately something like Midi, using little resources.
Microsoft is a software developer. Hardware vendors are doing a great job of pushing the high end market. Look at Intel, AMD, NVidia, and all of those companies pushing out SSD drives.
If PC gamers (largest gaming platform) switched to consoles we would worry.

I think people just forget that ALL Apple products are premiumly priced, pre-designed, self-contained products. They're not meant to be cheap, or serviceable, there are plenty of other options for that kind of thing.
Let's not forget that RAM for instance is less important with SSD drives and virtual RAM available, and that Thunderbolt means any external SSD is going to be as fast as your internal one.

So SSDs up to 2013 at least in retina mbp's are upgradable. :)

Apple is mobile phone company. They are good at producing fancy smartphone and making tons of money from it. And they have flashy iDevices for your mother and grandma. MacPro? Who cares? It doesn't provide enough money to run a large company.

Suh-weet, I was hoping you'd show up eventually. Just wouldn't be the same otherwise, thanks for joining us!

the drives are PCI-e flash boards now. they are replaceable, there just aren't a lot of aftermarket options. they are much faster than any SATA SSD though.

The OP has a point about Apple-owned applications but it's a real stretch to think that changes in Mac OS will cause Steinberg, Avid, Adobe and other companies to suddenly drop Mac support.

Microsoft is already heading in the same direction...you have seen Win8, right?

I work in the computer industry and the current trend is to allow users to access the same apps and content from all devices they own. That is what is driving these OS changes.

I'm still waiting for someone to crack the nut of having any device wirelessly use the nearest peripherals like displays (including your TV or the screen in your car), speakers, keyboards, printers, storage, etc. just as easily as they access Cloud resources today.

Can Apple or an authorized dealer upgrade the RAM and drives on the new Macs or it just can't be done at all? Big difference between can't be done and can't be done by you.

The RAM is soldered at least on the new MacMini, so the answer is: NO

As far as I know solder can be unsoldered. It’s a major benefit of solder.

People that build and repair electronics are soldering and unsoldering things all day long? What makes you think this is an impossibility with Apple hardware?

There was plenty of money to be saved by upgrading the RAM (the only user-upgradeable component in the last iMac gen) yourself later on. :x

^ that's why they stopped it. Apple wants the huge profit they're making by raping their customers on RAM upfront. if you break it all down the profit they make on the RAM probably comes close to paying their cost for the mother/logic board.

kitekrazy wrote:Thunderbolt isn't really catching on like wildfire. Look at the audio card vendors that have them. Few. I seen a Focusrite unit that claims Thunderbolt support but it's via an adapter. Some that are more dedicated to Apple hardware have those ports. I'm angry at Apple for moving the hardware industry away from 1394 or FW. A firewire port was standard on most Intel boards and many Asus. I have a Presonus 1394 and M-Audio FW410. These are great units that may eventually become doorstops. Most of my audio interfaces are now legacy products. If I had to do it again, I'd fork over a lot of money for RME devices because they are supported for a long time. I read on another forum a guy got a RME Babyface for under $600 with a Musicians Friend coupon. Right now USB is popular. They plug into everything and are backwards compatible.
there's a firewire to thunderbolt adapter so the game is far from over. i used one when i bought my iMac because my interface at the time was firewire. since the throughput on Thunderbolt is higher there is no degradation in the signal.
