Somewhat agreed.

It not even showing up in this thread is a good sign.

Long name is still annoying, it's always screeming for attention. Which is probably its purpose :lol:

Well it bothers me and at least a few others that experience a broken layout anywhere he/she/it posts.

As far as trolling, dunno how to call it when someone insists on a name like that although having been made aware on the problem and the only reaction is
use safari bitch

It really annoys me to a point where i think i won't follow any threads anymore in which this person/idiot is participating in.

go to your style sheet, which is located here
styles/subsilver2/theme/stylesheet.css

and edit line 216 of that document to read

Code: Select all

p.topicauthor {
    margin: 1px 0;
    word-break: break-all;
}
that is all. Problem solved.
Finally a sane voice.

In waiting for a resolution by the ones who can address it, may I ask all web site preset readers that wants personal control over stuff like this to investigate browser "user style sheet" and realize that you are in control and web designers are not. Guess whose style sheet carry the most weight in browsers?

Yes, this means you will have to understand a little about how your browser works and how to apply a CSS tip you get without breaking your favorite web sites. But you will feel empowered when you take control of your browser experience.

i asked the user "ohigetbywithalittlehelpfrommyfriends" to shorten his username as it destroys the layout of the forum in every thread he posts for most users (i'm using the latest version of Firefox) and several people have already complained.

Example:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=208014&start=105

but it's the same in any other thread he participates in.

Unfortunately he refuses to shorten his name, quote:
use safari bitch

so it'd be nice if you could either make him shorten his name or remove him from the forum.

Thanks.
It certainly bad netiquette to
  • Ask a user to change is name, that abides to the forum rules
  • Ask forum admins to remove a user because you happen to not like his name
This is a web site design issue and not a user issue. Is this your first time on the web? Perhaps even your first time using a computer?

Get real and learn about how things work before you needlessly attack members on these forums again.

You're not serious are you?!

I hear PDC is not working well in Live, but why complain, it's nothing a little programming in C by the user can't help, amirite?! :roll:

No wonder regular folks think nerds are disconnected from real life. :lol:

I did not suggest this as the final solution, but as something that can be applied right now. No need to wait. In addition I have not at all said that the users in this forum shouldn't complain about issues. On the contrary. But we should complain to the people in control of the forum web site. You disagree with this?

Applying prepackaged CSS is rocket science? It's not. This is a user forum where people do all kinds of technical manipulation on the setup of plugins and config files, from tips they read on the internet asking questions and often without fully understanding why something works.

I'm pretty sure most Live users suffering from PDC issues would happily download Xcode and compile some premade C++ code if that would improve the situation, if they had the full instructions. With relevant instructions anyone can do that. There would be no need to "code it yourself" as you imply.

I could walk trough anyone in any browser interested in applying the proposed solution, instead of being a victim of bad user interface design.

I already said this one is a design problem, so I have no idea what you're on about.

:lol:

You have no idea how much you sound like a nerd totaly disconnected from the real world that most people live in.

I regularly get :roll: responses on these forums when I complain about Apple taking away the possibility of upgrading your own RAM!!! People don't do that and therefore don't have an issue with it.

And that's for saving several hundreds of dollars!

I find it amusing that you would think someone is going to try to find out about CSS (Carbon capture and storage?! Oh wait, that was CCS ;-)) and web style sheets, just to fix an annoyance that probably will resurface in that particular configuration only once in your life.

I'm all for helping yourself, but this is taking it to comical levels :lol:

It's you who are disconnected from the technical world people typically below your age move around in freely. They are not "nerds". They are users. of course not all users are willing to do anything "out of the ordinary", but there are many that are willing to do that. You are living in the past thinking there are people and then there are nerds. idiotic assumption!

I support users less technical than the average Live user every week. They can do this and equal "hard" tasks, like run commands in the Terminal. If motivated, i e if it will fix problems they are affected by, they can do several semi-complicated steps. Sometimes this is necessary.

If they can do it I can't see why not a typical Live user can, if they are motivated.

And, again, this was proposed as an alternative not as the final solution. After all, it would take 1 minute for a site developer to fix this site wide (Assuming the site have well structured CSS).

my own forum stylesheet looks like this, if anyone else wants to have a less fleshy style. This is for firefox because I'm still sticking with yesteryears browser.

A guide and screenshots:

dont know if you refer to the color, but if you do, the flesh color is much more towards the red.

this forum color is a yellowish grey oker.

(caucasian) skin color is much more towards the pink/salmon.

Well, you're in luck. You can fix this yourself in Firefox right now. Just do these simple steps and install the Stylish Addon. Just PM me if you get into any problems with it.

Fix long author names in Firefox: (Stylish for Chrome is available too. Check at the end)

1. Go to the the official Firefox add-on web site for Stylish
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/
2. Click on the "+ Add to Firefox" button
3. Read the dialog window that pops up and if you agree with the message press the "Install Now" button.
4. In the upper left of your firefox window there will be a message window stating you need to restart Firefox. Click the "restart now" option.
5. When Firefox has restarted, come back to this web page again (Use the History menu if need be)
6. Copy the CSS code below carefully and only the text with white background

(Note that if you're using Chrome, skip the first 2 lines!):

Code: Select all

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("forum.ableton.com") {
  .roundedtl  {
    min-width: 100px;
    width:150px;
    max-width: 150px;
    overflow: hidden;/*in case next doesn't work*/
    -ms-word-break: break-all; /*IE10*/
    word-break: break-all;
}
7. After you copied the CSS go to this web page: Page 8 of "taylor pulled out" and scroll down to a post from "ohigetbywithalittlehelpfrommyfriends".
8. In the browser address bar find the white "Stylish" symbol with an "S" on a multicolored background.
9. Click on it and select "Write New Style" and in the submenu select "For forum.ableton.com".
Image
10. In the dialog that pops up set a name like "Ableton Forum Column Fix" in the name field
11. Go to the big insert area below and select all text with Cmd-a (Mac) or Ctrl-a (PC) and press your backspace or delete button.
12. Make sure this area is empty and paste the code you copied in step 5 into it.
Image
13. Optionally press the "Preview" button and glance at the post area and verify that the name "ohigetbywithalittlehelpfrommyfriends" is now on 2 lines and isn't making the leftmost column too wide. Finally Click Save.

Problem fixed!

Of course it's better the admins fix this when they can, but if you can't wait…

If you happen to use Chrome go instead to the official Chrome web store page for Stylish and install this extension. Skip the browser restart.

Instead of Step 9, Click the "Manage Styles" link. PM me if you need more detailed instructions for Chrome.
