Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
Re: Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
Personally, I don't think Apple made this for any sort of professional application - its just for the casual user who needs ultra portability.
The specs alone suggest it's not going to be of any use for a music professional.

Erik, what brought you to Luxembourg? That's quite a transition.
Where'd you live in Seattle? I just went to up there for the first time a few weeks ago. It reminds me of a bigger, busier Denver. Awash in tech money. And goddamn I had the best Korean food ever at a place downtown. Jaw-droppingly good bibimbop and kimchee.

What I think is BS is that they slapped a retina display in this thing but not the refreshed MBAs. This is a calculated move to force people to make tough decisions and more likely to go with the more expensive option.
They did the same thing with the refreshed Mac Minis which could be workhorses for all but the most high of high end audio and video. They lowered the price but also watered down the specs so you’d end up buying the more expensive model which is only slightly better than the previous generation base model.

What's a Mac? There is a store locally that sells them as culinary delights.... Big ones at that.... In fact, I often create loops at my table while having lunch...
with my laptop my PC...
(An Asus U47A that I bought refurbished from Newegg for $450 a year ago. I7 Intel 2.6 Ghz, 4 GB, 750 gb HD. I upgraded the HD to an SSD (and use the 750 externally), added 4 GB memory, and the laptop screams....) I also replaced the optical drive with a second SSD...
(Update: I tried to delete this message. Honestly....
And since I can't, then THIS: http://www.musicradar.com/us/news/tech/ ... ook-617724

Royale with cheese. Le Big Mac.
This would suck less if the updates to the Macbook Pro line were more meaningful. But according to Geekbench, the updated Pro's are actually slightly slower than last year: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/10/mac ... enchmarks/
Faster memory and flash storage is cool, and maybe the haptic touchpad will be a nice addition. But overall these are such incremental upgrades. I guess we'll have to wait for Skylake for some more meaningful improvements.
Awww who am I kidding though? I'm sitting here talking about CPU speed when in fact I only produced one fucking track last year. I want a good bang for my buck when I upgrade - but is that CPU going to write a goddman song? No it's not. Is my current 2011 Pro too slow to use Ableton? Not at all.

Re: Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
The core of my creative problem is that nothing sounds cool to my ears. I'll dick around with something - say, last night playing around with some chord progression - but it just doesn't go anywhere. It all sounds blah. It's like I'm overly jaded.
Inspiration is a funny thing. I released a few dozen songs from 2009-2011, an album in 2012 and an EP in 2013. Played a fuckload of shows around town from 2009-2013. Then just kind of hit a wall.
Anyway, that's cool you're in Denver too. Just added you on SoundCloud.

Re: Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
I just realized this computer is completely unnecessary. It’s like Apple is having the public beta test their new hardware tech (keyboard, track pad, and single I/O port) at a premium price. I suppose we can just be grateful they didn’t force their single I/O port on a more established model....yet. Was anybody seriously going 11" is too small and 13" is too big?
Re: Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
Maybe you just need to try something totally new, a completely different style or sound. That's what I've been doing, last night I just wrote a kind of Dub almost Reggae type song. I usually do higher energy dance stuff but I changed it up and got all kinds of inspiration. I've also been re-learning to play the guitar, so we'll see what that does for me.Kent_in_CO wrote:The core of my creative problem is that nothing sounds cool to my ears. Good luck, I'll add you back on soundcloud and maybe I'll see around town sometime who knows

Re: Let's talk about the new 12-inch Macbook
This new laptop is sexy and certainly has its uses but it’s beyond stupid for music production for many reasons (small screen, 1 single IO port that also doubles as charging slot (LOL), underpowered CPU, etc.).
The only even remotely interesting aspect for music producers is the fact that it’s fan-less and thus absolutely silent but that hardly makes up for all the rest.
Apple is certain to include the ForcePad into future MBPs as well these could have interesting uses for producers. Just imagine a velocity and pression-sensitive, Kaosspad-like trackpad directly integrated into the notebook!
