re:dream wrote:(1) make a sound and record it.
(2) duplicate it.
(3) phase reverse the second one. Sound cancels out perfectly.
(4) slap spectrum analyser on one
Sound still cancels percectly.
Therefore spectrum has no effect on the audio.
Did you do this or are these instructions?

I did this. I also invented a new spelling for 'perfectly'

you mean, that's not a technical term for the undetected defected effect affect on the audio signal?

Rumor has it if you stack 13 Spectrum Analyzers parallel in an audio rack the sample rate goes up to 4,320k which is the frequency that opens the portal to Hell. One of Peter Gabriels engineers was experimenting with this in the early 90's and apparently he would have epileptic fits if he didn't have angora underwear on.

Alright, I wanted to get real scientific, so I used a 4-second recording of white noise. I duplicated the first track and used Utility to set them both to opposite phases. I grouped the tracks and confirmed that while the two white noise tracks were at 0.0 db, the summed group track was completely silent. I then added each of the following spectrum analyzers, VU meters, and analysis tools to one of the white noise tracks:
- Ableton Live Spectrum (native plugin)
Voxengo AnSpec
Voxengo SPAN
T-RackS CS Metering
Klanghelm VUMT
brainworx bx_control (GUI folded so that just meters display)
Vengeance Sound VPS Scope
Flux:: Stereo Tool V3
The group track was routed to another audio track for recording.
In every case, the null signal created by the two phase inverted audio waves remained
null. I couldn't detect even the slightest ripple when any of these plugins were added to one side of the summed signal.
The conclusion I'm left with is that the sound I was hearing was a slight "pop" caused when I would cut and paste one of these plugins into another location. Rather than have numerous instances all over my project, I usually only have one that I move around wherever I need it.
So there you have it! The ones I tested *are* transparent.

Pffft! All that proves is that Utility is obviously skewing the results!

How bizarre...Spectrum has a built in limiter

Ah, you got me. It is a portmanteau word from when the perfection is only a perception.

Nope, of course not. It's just random babbling with no actual source. Of course, the same poster has also included quantum mechanics as possibly changing bitwise reads as well as suggesting that simulated gain (whatever that is) would somehow improve spectrum resolution

Schrodingers frequency, bro. It's like, there, but it isn't.

there are 8 letters in the word spectrum
there are 8 letters in the word analyzer
8 + 8 = 16
1 and 6 is 7
a triangle has 3 sides just as there are 3 letters in the word off
7 + 3 = 10
there are 10 letters in the word Illuminati
Conclusion: The Illuminati will stop at nothing to keep the spectrum analyzer off
