Well, Simpler is a simple instrument but can be quite useful.

Drum racks is the most vital feature in Ableton Live! Like Sampler it is most certainly an instrument and one I would never ever want to be without. Quick, fast and effective playing and mixing any sound source to exactly where I want it. My drums depend on racks.

We were drifting off topic - I use racks all the time - drum and instrument.

I was just talking about synths for synthesis and the usefulness of the Live synths for synthesis - for me Kontakt is a synthesiser and not just because of the filters etc. in the same way that Live Sampler is not for me a useful sampler.

Still think Massive is easy to program...

Right now I am using synth1 but is sometimes it doesn't work when I use osc the filter? the synth just stop working. Only the preset I try to change on is working evan If overdo with the decay or the attack the sound doesn't change.

and does Max for Live provide to make your own synths?

Max For Live (m4l) does provide the tools to create your own synths but is definitely NOT for the faint hearted - it's pretty hardcore stuff imo

Did you mean Sampler is not a useful synthesizer for you? Otherwise I understand how you mean. Kontakt is great, but I like Sampler for its immediateness and speed of doing stuff with drums primarily, but also for synth patches based on my own samples. I've yet to find the reason to get into Kontakt as a synthesizer or at all, but I have a feeling I'll like it. A bit daunting GUI though, if you ask me. I also would like to get rid of many presets which means I have to listen trough them. I guess that such problems are nice to have.

Well, it is if you already know synthesis and for some people it's probably a good intro synth too. I can't explain it very well though for my friend that uses many hardware synths and I've barely touched the surface so far myself even though I understand all parts. What I've done is even so truly musical and nice, so it certainly is a rewarding and nice instrument.

Just like Razor, it's immensely more versatile than for the Dubstep roaring bass synth sounds that some use them for and that both initially were quite associated with. I think I've heard more crap sounds made with Massive than with any other synth, except for Sylenth1. Probably a taste thing.

What's really nice about having a sampler (Kontakt) with such great time stretching is that you can build a sampled instrument of 1 bar, 2 bar hits etc. at say 150bpm and then use it in songs at 180 or 140 bpm - just dial in the time stretch ratio = 150/new tempo

OK, but I build sounds with sampling, not musical parts. Time stretching is interesting for textures. You ever tried the paulstretch for that? I will get into Kontakt at some point, hoping for something reminding me of the Emulator user experience. First encounters have felt more like german engineerish.

I do too - but if your sample has any rhythmic element it will sound odd at different speeds

I generally rig up my sampling sessions with a glitch/stutter edit (artillery) plus distortion (ohmicide) plus lots of automation plus my synth and then I record it and load up into Kontakt.

If you play it back at some new tempo it won't work - hence Kontakt time stretch

Thanks for the description. I was going to get stutter edit, but Herse and Reaktor got in the way. My main partner has it and I used it in one of my remixes. Only scratched the surface though.

I always recommend Synth Secrets from SoundOnSound magazine. It's free and very detailed, including examples of how to do the same type of sound on different synths.

I always enjoy watching various videos from John Lemkuhl (Plug-in Guru) and Automatic Gainsay. They both are very knowledgeable and the videos are both entertaining and educative. It's almost like learning from your expert friend in his comfortable home studio.

Hi again! I have learn the basic of waves and such but one thing thats lacking to learn out from books and some tutorial I have seen. To be honest I don't want learn deep about this only want a easy "recipes". I learn better by doing not read to much of something just make me confuse what I ready know about synth Osc , env , amp , vic , arp.


expo, How do make I lead synth? A smooth sound or a little more hard sound of a synth or a pad synth.

I founded operator tutorial on groove3 is it worth checking out? have somebody seen it?

Open presets.

Then edit them until they're the initialize setting. Then see if you can get it back to sounding like the preset
