If this were the case we wouldn't be able to utilize bpatchers and poly~s.
I think the key point is the max editor must be launched through Ableton. That's pretty much the extent of it.
If that's true then it makes having M4L with Max 7 an even more robust tool because in addition to running/designing M4L devices one could also create Max patches to run in Max 7 demo mode that can do certain things from outside of Live that you can't from within with M4L.
