I use three devices, home studio only, no live performance...

A Motif XF workstation is my master controller keyboard, it handles transport, track select/arm/solo/mute, mixer volume and pan, etc. Pretty much any knobby MIDI controller keyboard could take it's place, but I owned it already when I bought Live.

The original Launchpad, I've had no reason yet to upgrade. Because it's so much simpler than Push for example, it's easy to overlook what you can actually do with it. The lack of fine control when using it to control functions like sends is less important to me than the immediacy. I think it's still the best choice for someone on a tight budget who can only afford one unit.

Novation Nocturn (discontinued but easily found used for about $50) maps instantly to rack macros...the eight knobs are endless encoders with LED rings that show the current settings. It can also control any Live device but you're flying blind since the mapping of knobs to parameters is somewhat random, best used with simpler devices that don't have lots of parameters. It can control third party devices if you are willing to take the time to map it. I find it's easier to put third party devices in a rack and set up the macro knobs instead. For third party devices only the "speed dial" in the center controls whatever your mouse cursor is hovering over, so you can take control of any single parameter without mapping anything, incredibly useful. Perhaps the best thing is how big it is. It's not cramped like so many other controllers trying to be as small as possible.

Push 2 paired with iRig Keys, fit well as my daily workstation. Not only it's more flexible to input notes and chords, but I'm using the iRig as an alternative controller for finger drumming too. Since I'm used to the keyboard layout. Also, it's more relaxing to play with a mini key above the computer keyboard for daily activity, without using the Push. Next to it is the Ultranova for a more synth oriented control and when I need a proper keyboard with an aftertouch. It's an excellent controller with AutoMap, which is also a nice audio interface and Vocoder.

Virus TI is my main full size keyboard - I'm a one synth kind of guy, so I got the best one I could.

Queno for finger drumming - small, portable, sits flat on a desk so no 'give' when playing. Swiss army knife of production controllers.

Alesis ControlPad for real drumming-because it's hard to do drum rolls on a pad controller

Line 6 FBV Shortboard for foot controls-controlling effects etc while hands are occupied

Akai APC40 mkI for transport/volume faders/clip launch- generally have my right hand on the mouse, and my left hand on the APC. Essential part of my workflow with no mapping/set up fuss.

iPad with Touchable to fill in any holes with custom templates

I don't believe any single device will do everything.
I use a combination of two ancient keyboards and a BCF footpedal setup for playing the actual notes.
And then for clips I use a launchpad alongside BCR for the dials (with Isotonik BCR-XL remotescript) , and an iPad with either TouchOSC or Lemur displaying info - such as what track/devices/macros are active. So the iPad is kinda my headsup display for the other hardware. Obviously I can also use it to seize control of whatever the other controllers activate.

I use Isotonik's LaunchSync to join all of these controllers together into one big thing.

And I find that's the best for me
