What is the best method or to create a drum beat / groove?

Have you ever tried using Abletons "Audio to beats" conversion feature? (or whatever its called)
I usually program my drums meticulously on a grid, managing sample selection and stuff note by note, but I suspect a beatboxer could get semi usable midi patterns out of that audio conversion feature.

Sure I have tried that, but my beatbox style is more of a free style improvisation, so the feature didn't translate it well. Also I didn't feel the need to do that for my type of music, especially since I have a decent source for drum sounds for being layered with my voice. But it certainly useful for many type of beatbox style.
