of my tracks! I'm smiling like a teen-ager in a girl-scout camp!
I'm happy as hell to be "filthy"
I did think of the "negative is positive" thing because I have
grandsons I hear saying something is "Sick" or "Twisted"
and even more coloful negatives and they're HAPPY about it.
"Filthy" was a new one on me.
Thanks for taking the time to listen AND write me back... you're the best.
It means something (special) when other producers compliment you on your hard work...
Hey if you have your tunage posted somewhere point me to it, please!
I'll give you an honest opinion, hopefully "disgustingly filthy!"

I think I kind of said this (but in a kinder, gentler, less ANGRY way.)dbfs wrote:See, this is the kind of world we've created - MF's don't even know what a compressor is doing or why it's needed,...

Listen up - A compressor is a tool.... It helps you fix shit. ...Like wildly dynamic material. It's not some magical fairy dust...
Truth be told, I totally agree with what you say about reducing dynamic range.
I NEED my dynamic range! Without it, my tracks are shit. They're FLAT!
One of the things that makes me a guitar player people seem to love to listen
to IS DYNAMICS... How many guitarists all use picks made out of stone that they
beat the instrument with (thrash) with everything on ten, 32nd notes;
chords or leads? Now ask me why I don't listen to that shit?
That's not a musician to me.
BUT... I have to support Stromkrafts statement that without using it WRONG FIRST
you really don't know how to stop "falling off the bike."
I thought the book suggestion was a great idea too. I was blundering through minefields
with Live and Instruments / VST's etc... and someone called me on that dumb shit too!
Someone on this board! They said "read these books/videos..." and I got others too.
Different paradigms, but a footprint path through the minefield.
And I re-learned not to try to figure everything out for myself.
Someone left a bread-crumb trail for me to follow!

that's cute, someone who thinks they know everything about compressors comes out but they probably only use it for mixingdbfs wrote:See, this is the kind of world we've created - MF's don't even know what a compressor is doing or why it's needed, but because everyone's running around creaming their jeans for compressors (why, who knows???) everyone thinks they just need to slap compressors on everything by default... Learn to mix with your faders and then start to understand when you need to reach for tools like compressors and EQ's and other processing to FIX PROBLEMS...![]()
no one said a compressor is going to fix my sound like some magic trick like you are insinuating with all this jerking off and creaming on pants...(whats with that btw?)
i asked what should i do to tame my compression when I'm using it in ways that you probably havent ever thought about using.
and i hope you're not including me in the "list of motherfuckers who don't know what a compressor is or why its needed"
you clearly didn't read my first post.

I get that issues may be somewhat "volatile" to some people,
BUT...
This is a public forum and if you can't express anger/frustration
without the vulgarity, name-calling and insults... Maybe don't hit
that button until you calm down and collect your thoughts?
Just sayin'
Nobody likes rants, and it doesn't help to make your point!
My wife once said to me;
"Yelling doesn't make you more right!"
And I had to agree she WAS right! Boy THAT hurt!
BTW... GREAT article on Abletons site regarding sidechaining and
"Ducking," Particularly drums. URL is below, no account necessary,
I backed out the URL to clear out my account info.
Wow! I got the kicks and snares "out of the mud" in two of my mixes
I thought couldn't get any better!
It's worth a look! BTW, the comp settings on the example SQUASH
everything so of course, play with the Attack, threshold and ratio
settings... "Season to taste" if you wish. I found it VERY helpful,
and... I have read three books by accomplished Mix/Mastering "Gods"
so I do know where, when, why AND HOW to use EQ / Compression.

I am too familiar with the artists mentioned
I feel great about the direction I'm taking.
