WEAK (someone prove me wrong)
He's not asked them for an equivalent rebate, he's just whined on an open forum. So let's say some sales guy at Abe HQ decides to say "Enough already, here, take $50" then we are all going to want it. It doesn't work like that.
This is the position I am in; I already have my upgrade to Live 5 in the bag, because I unlocked live 4 recently. So I can't get the special price, because I have already got my upgrade. That's my tough shit, I won't be moaning about it.

draff, I don't ask for your respect. I get that from others in my profession.
However, I'll tell you this: I did ask for an adjustment. I did not expect them to provide it, and I didn't get one. As far as I know nobody else who bought before the release got one either.
Let's suppose they did this -- How far back should such gimmes go? One week? That would have suited me... and left some guy who bought eight days earlier even angrier. One month? That would've made more buyers happy... and the software maker would be out of business by now, because they can't go throwing already earned money around that way. They depend on it to pay their employees and keep the lights on. I'd rather like them to stay in business, because I'm certain to buy from them in the future. Their software keeps ME in business.
I got what I paid for, even if I didn't get the super deal I might have. NO LOSS!
And that's my last word on the subject. I've already spent (maybe wasted) too much time on this, and have better things to do.

I was just about to post a post like the original poster of this thread, then I read this through and came to insight. Satori!
I have of history of missing good deals...
But, as said, you have to fall on one side of the fence.
And I have been using Operator for some month, and that has cost me some in relation to the deal, but OK I wanted it as part of the beta.
I just lost about 4000$ on an appartement, but on the other hand I have used it, lived there, so the loss may be considered a rent.
I agree with the pineapple point of view made here.
And, BTW, this is a great forum for clearing things out.
The shit given and taken at times does not contradict that fact.
Thanks guys.

Meffy,
Sorry brother, I didn't mean to insult you. I was referring to just that transaction. I know nothing about you, and wasn't trying to say you're not respect-worthy in general.
Anyway, to answer your question, 10-14 days is the general rule of thumb in retail for price adjustments. If you bought it 15 days ago, then tough.
Finally, if you did in fact ask for the adjustment in your situation, aren't you more or less agreeing with our boy here in wanting his $50?!?

i must say that i agree with everyone: i think this discount is not fair to the ppl who have bought operator and want to upgrade, and i'm allowed to raise my voice about it.
in the meantime, i know that ableton is not a charity organisation, what they want is more users and more money, and i can't blame them for that.
but i prefer them to take more of other's ppl money and less of mine.

This is utterly lame. Meffy is 100% right. Do not complain when someone gets the same thing cheaper. You were not ripped off, you got A Product, and it cost you A Certain Amount. You have the product and you can use it. Someone else got the product and they paid less. You still have the product. You have lost nothing. If you wanna use it and pay for it, great. If you wanna steal it you're a shitbag. Ableton are a totally excellent company and I hope they prosper, so that we all get better tools to make music with. If you want to moan about the price you paid for Operator, get in touch with Ableton direct and moan to them. If they have any sense they will politely tell you to take a long walk off a short pier.
If Operator is as good as everybody says then it is worth the money. This offer will expand their customer base, not satisfy existing customers. That is not why they are doing this. They are a business, they need to win customers and generate profit so they can fit into this invidious capitalist nightmare which we all occupy. Sorry folks, buy the tools you want and use them to death. If you find you paid more for your tools, maybe you will value them more than somebody who nicked them or got them cheap.
Personally I would pay £600 for Live and still not feel short changed. But I feel lucky cos it cost me nowhere near that. And it is the best music software I've ever used. Ain't life great ?
I think if you're complaining, you are simply advertising to the world that your glass is half empty. Go and make some music instead.

Okay, I'll go back on my word and post this much more.
draff, sorry if I came off as a bit miffed there. :-) Beg pardon.
I agree that it's okay to ask for a gimme. But I don't think it would be right for the Abes to provide it, as that would a) open the floodgates to more and more demands, and b) take money they need to continue developing their product line.
It's my position that money paid for goods that are delivered in good faith is money well spent, even if a better deal comes along later. After all, early buyers of Operator have had time to learn to take advantage of it, used it in their tunes, and are becoming the experts to whom the new users will turn with their questions.
You old-time Operator users... y'all are the first wave. The stuff of legend, the giants of future mythologies. In times to come there will be equestrian statues of you in public squares. Parades will be held in your honor, and firework shows. Newbies will look up to you with awe and admiration. And you'll be able to sit back and say "Yup, I was a pioneer... I fought my way into the wilderness so that you could follow."
Consider it a badge of honor, a token of the strength of your support of the Abletons.
Now I've got some Web work to take care of.
Be good, y'all -- whether I agree or disagree with your stand on this, we all depend on each other. Don't lose sight of the goal. MUSIC is what we're about, yes?
Do music.

i think you'll find it's called commerce
you buy a tin of beans at £1.00 a week later it's £0.85p a week after that it's £1.20 do you offer the supermarket 0.20p? of course you don't.
quick to moan when the price drops and quick to be smug when the price rises, thats the nature of it all.
$40.00 for operator! - stop smoking crack dude
mosca
PS - remember Ableton is a business - they want to make money

Somehow i suspect that Ableton loves making software more then making money.
And money is what they need to make more software.
If i had saved out 50$ now. What would i spend it on?
Charity? A big bag of.... ehm herbs? 1/2 hooker?
Not looking to boil some blood here.
I'm just saying. That as an operator owner from the first minute, i feel my purchase payed off.
Just look at live 5!
Now i'll pay the upgrade for Live 6.
Or a kickass sampler. A not-so-simpler or something.

I agree that there's no point in whining about it. But, I also think it'd be cool of the Abe's to offer a 30 day price match guarantee sort of thing. You know, if the product you purchased goes on sale within 30 days of your purchase date, they'll refund the differnce (or offer store credit). Just my 2 bits.
