It's even worse when you do none of the above (ie;drink/smoke/weed/party etc) and are still broke .
I have a budget of approximately $500AU (200UK pounds approx) for food /gas /electricity/phone/prescriptions/doctor appointments and general living expenses and rent per fortnight .
Got two dogs I have to budget for and sneak a bit aside incase they need too see the vet etc also.
That's how life is these days.
I wouldn't even have the setup I have now if I hadn't accumulated alot of hardware over the last 10-15 years.
All of it was sold to pay off debt , get the laptop and software setup and start off on a clean slate once I found out I couldn't work anymore.
I budget well and have too eat properly also (on a very strict dietary plan).
I just have to be realistic and make the most of what I've got.
At the end of the day I have great people in my life.
Fantastic family support a roof over my head and an interest in music too keep me sane so I am way better off than ALOT of folks out there.
Not having alot of money is an oddly liberating experience spiritually also.
A bit hard to explain really but you start to realise how much crap we let consume our lives when we don't really need it.
I'd still give my left nut for a good quality lightweight 1.6-1.8ghz Centrino that weighed around 2-2.7kgs and had some 3-4 hours battery life for hospital use etc .
I just have to work on music in my home and no where else.
Though SMUTEK if you ever get that car.

I'll take the Apple and keep this one for my PC only apps on one condition .
It has to come preloaded with Metasynth - I have drooled over that app for so many years it's not funny.
Actually I'm chronically hanging out for Tobor too finish the XP version of The Lab sometime soon.
That app is totally up my alley in a major way.
If I had the cash I would actually get a 17" iMac just for TheLab and Metasynth as is.
Maybe I'll win the lottery someday .

I mean, life in the world where diddling with midi, samples and Ableton exist as pastimes is most generally the 1st world where lazy people have the luxury of occupying their time with such pleasures. The fact that you are so strapped for cash that you can't afford an upgrade to L5 is fairly shocking.

No disrespect intended, but how did you end up in this dangerous situation that 100 bucks is beyond your budget?

Forget Live 5, what happens if you have some bad luck and need $500 for a broken jaw, to pay off a car crash claim or need to bury your mother in a decent grave? Even less dramatic, what happens if you get ill and don't get your wages? do you get evicted and rot in the street?

Just curious.

Ummm some of us have chronic degenertaive health problems who would rather work but are happy instead too live with constant chronic pain, never ending hospital admin's, a life on medication and generally being "lazy people who have the luxury of occupying their time with such pleasures" .......
Yeah it's a real social utopia out there.
Just try working from your late teens till your early 30's only to end up at this point.
Yeah sure it's a life everyone woulf choose .
I wouldn't even wish it on somebody else.
You make the best of the hand you're dealt in life.
Sometimes no matter how much you try you can't avoid having a spanner thrown in the works that kind of changes your lifes course for ever.
You just suck it up and soldier on.
Giving up isn't an option as far as I'm concerned.

I assume you are talking about your own personal situation Fax. Constant chronic pain, is of course, by definition, unbearable. I hope you have the support to make your agony tolerable.

I used to imagine, should my ridiculuous habits give me cancer or kidney/liver failure, that I would build a studio around my hospital bed and write music. But now I think I'd prefer to write a book. Most probably a novel.

Who knows, some of us will be there too.

Well I just bought my family to Oz, got us a house for good rent by UK standards but as I later found out the wages here are about a third lower and completely contrary to what I always took for granted, besides petrol, car insurance and a few other things that are much cheaper here, alot of stuff (like groceries and booze for one) is actually more expensive. So the salary I've been getting has been double the rent leaving not enough to pay for everything. The phone's just been cut off and we dont do anything at all extra. We've had money for rent and food and that's pretty much it. That's supposed to be on an average wage.

We're starting to find our feet, checked out entitlements to family tax benefit etc (which clearly had to be put in place because it's now no longer possible for a man to support a one child family on an average wage any more - rent etc all go up alot but wages rarely do) just sold my marshall amp for half what it's worth to get food money (still not enough for bills) and sold whatever else of use I could do without to get here in the 1st place.

we're going to move somewhere cheaper but I still dont see any feasible way of getting it in the near future unless I get a credit card.

I first upgraded to live 2 from 1.5 delta and havent missed an upgrade since including operator so I am quite gutted.

Anyway, enough of my whining, but you did ask!

Forge > you didn't ask for advice right ? I'll just say that in your position I wouldn't get a credit card and take good care of my family first, and I'm sure that's what you think and do right now. Just saying that to provide a slight support, since we all have someday tendencies to do unreasonable things.

Fax > Of course all my support and good mind go to you, I admire your courage and really well understand the freedom you're talking about, even the luck you may have, as we all have one, and yours leads you to reality. Hope I'm clear and this is not badly taken.
