I registered/unlocked Live 4 about a month ago...got my email saying I will get the free upgrade...
Your personal Live 5 serial number is ready for pick-up at
www.ableton.com/upgrade.
went to /upgrade and entered my Live4 serial and it gave me the Live5 serial without asking for money...all good

I ordered it last week. Went to the upgrade page at
http://www.ableton.com/index.php?main=upgrade
And it wants me to give more money to Ableton. Right now my inclination is to send the box back and ask for my money back.

When you say he entered it, what do you mean? The v4 serials won't work with live 5...

Just enter your Live 4 serial on the upgrade page. Your live 5 serial should be waiting there if you are eligible for one.
All "grace period" related stuff are for the sales people at Ableton.
