Thanks for your responses so far.
I know from past experiences that the ONLY reason that you work with audio applications OFFLINE intentionally, is if you were running cracked software that might phone home.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am getting a bad vibe from you.

Dude that makes perfect sense to me! I'm still on 4.0.3 because I don't like having to go through the uninstall/reinstall stuff. Prefer not to mess with my daw pc more than i can help it. The updates weren't crucial for me, but i think this new live 5 thing is gonna make a nice little dip in my finances. :( :) :( :D

A weired feeling here...

And Bernd: If had gotten that kind of answer from NI that you gave here, when I just now can't take my NI Komplete 2 through their obscure registration model, I would be extremly happy and glad for a great user support.

Not so. I have a dedicated XP installation for Audio work, that is not allowed any internet access.

Reason: My main XP desktop installation runs like a dog, weighed down as it is with anti-virus, -worm, -trojan, -spyware, -adware software, plus a plethora of other daemons doing other tasks related to my day job.

Having an XP installation that boots in seconds instead of minutes is great, but you just can't have that and use it for the internet at the same time. Not in my book anyway.

Before anybody says 'get a mac', i have a powerbook thanks :D

No cracked software here, just a depleted bank balance, and an annoyed wife :(

Hey techno man,
With respect, I think fridge magnet pointed out that he had actually bought a copy of live, and if bernd is gonna check his serial then he would almost certainly be able to spot if fridge was running a cracked copy of live. So why would fridge want to get in touch with ableton over a cracked copy? Think you may have jumped the gun a little. I agree with the earlier post from conny (back from the dark side eh conny? :) ) that bernd and ableton in general are first class with customer support. If el fridgo is daft enough to get in touch with ableton to validate a crack serial then he won't be giving himself much of a chance to enjoy the delights of L5...

now, I don't know this guy but a few things would send up red flags to me .. again, I could be totally wrong but.

1) Really, who buys software just to have the update for updates sake... never actually intending to run it. Bah, whatever bro. Dollars to doughnuts you unlocked it online a year ago. (Again, I could be wrong.)

2) He said he waits untill the update is rock solid and has all the bugs worked out. Really? then why are you chomping at the bit to get your hands on vesion 5? It just came out ... wait a year or so untill it's rock solid. :)

Your story would be more believeable if it were not human nature to try out something just bought for $200+

I mean really .... that's like me saying to you guys ... yep .. I went to compusa and bought a gig of ram for my main studio pc but I'm not gonna install it till I work on a project that will need it.

just my $.02 ... I could be way off.

Well, Ambioun-Techno Man. I will correct you. YOU ARE WRONG!!!!! I have never used cracked software in my life!!!!!!EVER!!!! I remember a long time ago a thread came up with regard to who has used cracked software. I said it then and I say it now, I have never used cracked software!!! I own a lot of software and I have receipts for all of it that verify my ownership. I find it insulting to be accused of using cracked stuff!!!!! Read what Telekom had to say further along this thread!!!!

conny wrote:A weired feeling here...
Don't tell me you too Conny think it is all suspicious?

To answer your questions incinereight:

1) I buy software just to have the update for updates sake. I am not short of cash or struggling financially, so I can afford to buy what takes my fancy, within reason of course.
2) I am not chomping on the bit as you say. I am just taking advantage of an offer. Plus I won't install it just yet. Not until I read that a lot of the main bugs people have been experiencing have been ironed out.
3) Yes you are way off if you think that there is something suspicious about this

One of my main charcter defects is that I am a bit anal retentive in certain things. Especially so regarding my absolutely ROCK SOLID DAW set-ups. My DAWs (I have more than one), are as solid and reliable as you can get!!! In fact I have never ever experienced a crash on my systems (for your information they are on "supposedly" unreliable XP machines) and one reason is I am extremely diligent about what I install and how I install it. Perhaps too careful, but I have absolutely trouble free set-ups that I know that up to now at least, always run reliably.

Bernd form Ableton has sorted out my problem and I am extremely grateful. I have a free update to LIVE 5. I am also extremely grateful for his speedy response in solving this issue for me. So as a mark of gratitude I will buy Operator, which I had no intention of buying (you can read some of my past posts on my opinion of Operator by the way to verify what I thought of it), to help the Ableton finances along to make a better product (ok I know it is a drop in the ocean).

So to all you people who thought I was using a cracked version. You are all WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!! And Bernd from Ableton could verify that, because I sent him my details and he could see that I was genuine.

Finally, I agree that it might be a bit strange to buy software and not install it straight away, but I have given my reasons. I take my time about these things because I want a rock solid system. Plus, I have many other gadgets, soft synths, toys to play with etc... to keep me busy, that I don't need to rush into things.

My only concern I guess is that I hope I haven't started a trend and somehow Ableton will suffer financially for this. Though I doubt it very much.

Excuse my long post!!!

So the $5M question is...are you going to install the new, first gen Live 5 on your "ROCK SOLID" DAW, or let it sit unused and try to weasel your way into a free version of Live 6 in a year?

There was a misquote. Problem with the bb code. Notice that lone quote up top with no terminator.

Yes. Looks like you wrote it but you didn't. Amboiono Techno man was the author I believe.

Just to add to this. I know plenty of PC people who use the cracked version of the software they actually buy!!! They are convinced the hacked software is more stable than the commercial releases, and honestly astral fridge magnet, that's what I thought you were doing, essentially getting Operator for your use of cracked software. You seem to just be a rich person who wants a free ride instead.

Now this sort of thing has to come with a disclaimer. Astral fridge magnet, I do not know you, but your methodology is now a beacon for people like my friend, "don't instal Live, and bitch for free updates that you really don't deserve", seriously, you bought Live 4, not 5, and though it's very nice of Ableton to give you 5, I really do not think they should have, you do not in fact deserve it. From what I can tell you are not a crack user, and I don't mean to imply you are but your reasoning is similar.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but how do you really think it's a legit complaint? " I bought Live 4 a year ago, but because I didn't need it, so I want a free update to the next version!" I'm happy for you, that Ableton decided to be nice to you, but I'm not sure I understand why you need to bitch about it online? and like I said, the precedent you're setting isn't so good. If you really do have the cash to buy software you do not use, why in hell should you get free updates over people who struggle to buy software they do in fact use?

Anyway I'm sure I made no friends with this post, and yeah you're probably taking a bit more heat than you deserve, but I struggle for my money working construction, I drive a shitty old car so I can buy things like the Live update, and some guy who whines because he bought software he didn't even need gets a free update that I have to pay for, and the only difference between the two of us is that you actually don't even need the software, and in fact can afford to buy it "just to stay current", so somehow you deserve it for free???

Life is a bitch sometimes, thanks for rubbing it in my face.

edit, in the spirit of machinesworking's post, I decided my post was too OT.

However, on topic, I too bust my ass for whatever I have. I recently ended an unpleasant experience with a band full of half-dedicated* (*EDIT) trustfund kids, and I have to fight myself consciously not to be jealous or jaded by people with disposable cash. The bitterness just get's in the way of the love, and it dosen't change ANYTHING. They're still gonna be loaded, and we'll still have earned more character.

Going back to the software: As long as Ableton gives people the same price to upgrade from 2-5, as from 4-5, does it really matter, provided he neve reven unlocked 4, if he get's the upgrade for free?

If anything, Ableton are just giving themselves more great PR by being SO chill in this situation, whereas if the didn't, they would be more like all the other earnings based scumfucks out there.

Goodness...

What the hell is this? Astral didn't come up with the rules of free upgrades. The Abes have said that it's about registration date - and of course Astral is claiming what's his. I would too if I had an unregistred copy of Live 4 hanging around, whatever the reasons were.

And about him being "rich" and you driving an old car and working in construction...? What does that have to do with anything? I too am in a similar position. I used to be a pre-school teacher. I love working with the kids and did a pretty good job - but did not make much money. But being good at what I did combined with adding some extra university courses got me a job at the college teaching becoming pre-school teachers and primary teachers. Thus making a bunch more money than I did before.

Nope - it's not a blue collar job in any sense, but I've fucking worked for what I have accomplished - and I'm sure Astral has too. So don't put him down 'cause he doesn't have too struggle to pay an update.

Cheers,
Mikael

I will wait until I read that less and less people are experiencing bugs.
Machinesworking wrote: You seem to just be a rich person who wants a free ride instead.

I would say not struggling financially more than "rich". With regard to your "free ride" comment. All I did was take advantage of an offer. I love a bargain when I see one. Who doesn't? As Lo-Fi Massakah says further along in this thread, I didn't make the rules. Ableton did
Machinesworking wrote:

Maybe they will change that in future and make it the date of purchase rather than unlock date.
Again, all I did was take advantage of an offer. I had no intentions to short change Ableton at all. They make a great product and their support is efficient and speedy too. They deserve all the revenue they get. So as some recompense I am buying Operator, a synth that I had no intention of getting.

I think you are being harsh. I agree that the precedent maybe isn't good, but I am sure the rules will change and I am happy too that Ableton were nice. I actually didn't expect it. But I didn't make the rules and I took advantage of an offer, which is what anyone else would have done. You say I don't use the software I buy. well, that is not completely true. I do use it, but I might not install it until I know it is as bug free as it can be. What's wrong with that?

I must say though, that I really didn't expect some of the negative and bitter responses.
