A question about S & D's set. They were playing back 2 back. How does Sasha mix into Digweed's tunes. I can understand Digweed beatmatching with the cdjs to Sasha's tunes but how how do you beatmatch with Ableton?

this is very easy, you assign a fader to the tempo, then go into the arrange page view go to the bottom (master) and put tempo between say 125 - 140. this way you get a genuine fader control much like that on technics or cdj's

you then just whack a loop in there and beat match it by pressing stop then clicking the loop start at the beginning of a bar.

simple no midi clock stuff needed.

Although people slag off dj's there is certain things from their trade that they know better than sound engineers and musos.

i don't know really , i haven't touched a turntable or entered a dj shop since i got live 1 ,i might have lost touch with the dj technology .

to be honest ,if i was playing next to sasha playing on ableton live with his own custom made controler i would probably look & feel pathetic if i was playing with cd decks .i am not having a go at digweed but man , doesn't he like ableton live & want to sit next to sasha with the proper up to date technology & look less old fashion ?

Yeah I wonder that too, I guess Digweed is happy doing things the way he does them already. My DJ partner has been eyeing my Live setup and I expect him to switch over at some point. It does have a much more difficult learning curve than traditional DJing, so that may keep some people away from it. Not that Live is hard but if you don't have the DAW etc background it could be a bit daunting compared to traditional decks.

when sasha played w/ burridge he was using redsound microsync

How much does the microsync run? Where can I get one? I haven't seen too many US redsound dealers. I have also been looking at "in-time" which is a software solution but I don't think it will sync to audio. The redsound infader mixer is sweet..

Not sure where to get one new.. Actually I don't think they are even making them anymore.. Come to think of it, i've not seen any of redsounds stuff available new at all in a loooong time. Are they still making gear?

Check ebay for a used one, or get ableton to add this to Live:

Yeah nothing on ebay. I looked at their website and they still make lots of gear but who knows where to get it. People like Sasha get stuff sent to them for free. I can only imagine what his home studio looks like. ;)

I had absolutely no production software experience, and taught myself Ableton well enough to use in a live performance a matter of days. I don't think it's all that hard to learn if you have DJ experience.... because as a DJ you'll have a fundamental understanding of how tempo matching works. This helps with learning warp markers, etc...

I can tell you know that they don't get everything free. I work for a retailer that a lot of dj's get there stuff from (not naming any names).

as for the sync thing i don't even know if this would work as you would have to keep turing it on and off because as soon as the CD deck track ends it no longer has a audio signal to track therefore confusing the likes of ableton unless it just don't send a midi clock signal. also a break beat would put it right off track. I know in fabric they have a bpm detector in the booth full time even when ableton is not playing just for some of the new breed of djs that can mix without them.

my tupence

Yeah I dont really change the master tempo much when I mix live with Ableton. I go from maybe 126-132 but not much variation outside of that.

Do you guys change the master a lot when mixing live?
