I also used to use a FW410 and got fed up with their dodgy drivers. I went with the 828mkII since it had a great reputation and had been out for a year. I considered the Traveller but went with the 828 since it was rack mountable. I do on occasion take it with me for mobile sessions. In that case I mount it in a 1U rack briefcase and take it with me. Then the laptop sits on top of the case during the session. The Traveller is a great unit too though despite its being bus-powered I wonder how long your batteries will last using it that way.

I was looking at the traveller but opted for presonus firebox, after reading this starting to wish i had gone with the traveller maybe later on down the track, I still have high hopes for the firebox, still waiting for it to arrive but will let people know how it goes if anyones interested ?

Im comparing the traveller to the mk2 right now. you all talk about the traveller but what about the mk2? you can still use it in a live setting and its got more I/Os. question though...and this is a stupid question... what do you need multiple outputs for? wouldnt you just need a master out?

also if you're in a live setting i can understand the battery power thing but if you can't get a power cord for your mk2 then you are hurting man! lol. also, a G4 doesnt have a very good battery life anyways so i would opt to have that plugged in. true you could keep swapping batteries on the damn thing but who wants to mess with that? plus what about your other devices that require pluged in? lol. what the hell good is having your audio interface battery powered when all your other gear would need a plug in? am i missing something????

Well for me, the less power sockets I need the better.
Which is: one for computer and audio interface, two for guitar amp and effects board,

Multiple outs can be handy, for instance, if you want to provide the drummer with a click track.
Or for studio production, you may want to use outboard gear and rout part of the signal out and back into the computer again.

i'm pretty sure the traveler and the mk2 have the same number of ins and outs... the traveler just has 4 mic pres... whilst the mk2 has only 2.

as for why you may need multi outs.... what i am currently doing is using the digital out and in as an fx send to a compressor... then routing the signal back into the main stereo out. Also, in a similar vein, attatching a korg kaoss pad to a stereo out pair, then again routing the ins back to the main stereo out....

so... yes, multi outs are useful when using outboard gear.

also... you can send seperate headphone mixes out, whilst still having the main mix running out 1&2.

and to top it off... for my current setup, i also need to be able to have sends into and out of the computer running fx for different instruements... so, again seperate outs are needed.

... and the traveler can do all this at the same time!

give us a report on the firebox when you get it uo and running - I was minutes away from getting it when I opted for the traveler. i read some dodgey things about its causing the cpu to spike every few seconds.

Ok, but my cpu is spiking in live anyway just using built in sound so would be hard for me to tell if the firebox is causing it ? But damn, I didnt hear that, i was just reading the good stuff

Anyone want to buy a firebox ?

Nah, I still think it might be good from what I've heard so I'll give it a go, I like it for its portability too and has enough ins and outs for me but if I have problems with it also then I think i will get the traveller because I just need something that works !

fwiw, i used two travelers last night to record my show live. i was backed up by a three piece band, and we had my mic, four instruments, and another mic being routed through Live and the 1st traveler, and bussed out and recorded by the second traveler!

it worked real dope, and we had no issues whatsover! the recording is sounding pretty nice too, after a quick preliminary listen!

the traveler is dope all the way around!
