I own an Audiophile and a 12.1 Powerbook............. Never hotplug it.

Odd...this just started happening to me, too! Only my variables are somewhat different: flatscreen G4 iMac and a MOTU 828 (MK I). Worked fine for years, then last week, the 828 started shrieking at me, and now the iMac won't recognize the 828 unless I turn it on and off and back on again after starting the Mac...and for the 2+ years I've had these things, I've never had to do that.

Even then, after getting it recognized, it only works for about 20 minutes or so, then starts shrieking again.

And, like the poster here, the FW port also fried my iPod. Fortunately Apple gave me a brand new one, no questions asked.

Still have the firewire/828 problem, though.

I was beginning to think it was perhaps the last Apple Security Update, as that's the only new thing I've installed on my computer in the last few months.

Otherwise, I'm clueless...

My theory is if the device draws more current through firewire than an ipod, plug it in while both machines are powered down.

Any audio interface that has mic pre's and provides phantom power fits that description.
