You CAN record automation into session clips right now, just only with controls that have NOT been mapped to anything. This is the most strange contradiction in all of Ableton Live.
So yeah, go ahead and record all the automations you want in session clips just make sure that CC control is not mapped to anything useful, otherwise, too bad! (!?!?!?)
For now the only way I can do any kind of automation recording in session clips is using midi learn directly on my VSTs instead of using the live midi mapping... That thread by ryansupak shows that it is almost already possible through a workaround so this feature has to be coming soon!

I'm used to recording automation moving the controls from a Vsti with the mouse. This is also impossible in session view! Is this correct?
