please remember to turn off any wireless networking when using soundcards... often the problem starts there...

On my Asus, the internal FW is on IRQ 16, which is shared among a bunch of components. The PC card slot, however, is on 17 with the network connection and flash card port, both of which I can control. Looks like a PC card based FW is the way to go.

I'm using M-Audio FireWire Audiophile with Asus L3C laptop (well, quite old
) - it runs without any problems. But before I bought M-Audio someone adviced me to check, that firewire controler on laptop's mainboard is not VIA, because that one caused many problems with FW audio units.

Is disabling the other devices or changing the IRQ for the firewire port an option (BIOS maybe)? I've had IRQ issues with my desktop and I had to fiddle with windows a lot, but got it working.

i'm sure m-audio know about this issue , everyone i know has had some prob or the other ... including myself !!!
high time they do somthin abt it !!!
( throw in a free TI chip PCMCIA/PCI card )

i never had any problems with an Asus A2H, though a friend had nothing but problems with his M6 and an M-Audio unit. I think a LARGE part of the problem lies with M-Audio... they have gone to shit since the lovely PCI card days and their drivers and hardware are poorly supported budget gear now. Still sounds good once working, works ok when working but nothing special. The friend of mine got a PMCIA firewire card and is having no problems now.
Having said all that about M-Audio, there is an issue with Asus too. The PMCIA card will fix this. I now have an M6 too and i have no problems with an X-Station... USB is fine. I wouldnt bother with Firewire personally, ive not had a single problem with the X-Station and 2 ins 2 outs is enough for me.
