Seriously tho' if Live encourages more people to play music and, hence, make music then it can only be a good thing. Just make sure you remember that whoever you're holding up as an icon others will look down upon.
Ableton DJs, please pack your bags and go home

as i said i love ableton but i hate the whole new wave of shite, fake wannabe djs it has created.....
some folk should stick to making the music and others stick to playing it.....cant gat any fairer
p.s whats all this icon nonsense about
The old two-turntable thing is all played out. I got bored of that stuff years ago. Only the very best guys are any fun to watch or even listen to. I think I've seen a thousand 13-year old white kids from suburbia that could rock the decks as good as anyone.
Live and CDJ stuff has given Dj-ing the much-needed creative revitalization that it's needed for a very long time.

turntables are better then....blah blah blah.....ableton is the future....blah blah blah....cdj's take more skill....blah blah blah....warping is cheating....blah blah blah....my dick is bigger then your dick....blah blah blah
do a search, read it, maybe add to one of the three-trillion already existing posts if you really feel the need, but FFS, get over it.
Just play the music you like, that you think might make other people smile, stop over analysing this shit and maybe step outside occasionally and go for a walk, run, surf, whatever it is you do.

half a man walks with no shadow
Muwhahaha....what do you mean that DJ's can't improvise between A#/Bb Locrian in 7/8 and G#/Ab Phrygian in 3/4 on the fly? My illusions have been shattered!smutek wrote: Then all the elitist "I'm a real musician" fags sulk in the shadows moaning about how no one understands their "art", plotting their revenge?
Smutek - don't really care what folks do as long as they're having a good time doing it - that's the vibe that folks pick up on.

Really though, I dj and, even though I am hardly a musician, I do live stuff also. As a matter of fact "FEAR the plumber" is my newest live project.
I dj as smutek though. And smutek is the type of dj who actually would drop an atonal glitch waltz track during primetime at a big club.
I suppose that's why I will never see a primetime slot at a big club.....
F*ck em though! I'm true to it yo!

Yeah, hi. I've been DJing for 6 years now it takes me about 10 seconds to beatmatch perfectly, blah blah...
I know how to use turntables, CD players, FS, Live, Traktor, Winamp with pitch controls, etc etc...
The platform I would prefer is a combination of Live and traditional turntables. I'd like to be able to control a file in Live with the feeling of a traditional turntable. However, I don't want to be bothered with the hassle of beatmatching, and I want the flexibility of Live, with its effects, cue points, sampling, etc etc.
For now, I will stick with Live and my MIDI controller. But hey, I'm going live PA, so I don't need to DJ any more. That shit is boring to me for the most part. Give me a 12 channel mixer and a bunch of synthesizers any day over a stack of records.
So, hi, don't say that the method with which I present music is a joke, because I'll mix you to hell and back! Rrrgh.

Amazing how many narrow-minded 20th century circus DJs are willing to expose their insecurities and shortcomings on a public forum!sonorous3 wrote:OK so I dont mean all obviously. But this has been bothering me most lately is the wave of the Ableton DJ who thinks once he/she has got beatmatching/warping down they are a DJ to be of the future.
Guys, beatmatching is not even half of what DJing is about...congrats if you find out how to warp a track after your 2 month learning curve. However, DJing is about your tracks selection, the order you put it in, the flow, the moods you create with it- one that makes makes musical sense...and for God's sake please do it all harmonically!
just a rant.
p.s. dont bother playing around pushing buttons and truning knobs on your controller when your not actually doing anything...alot of us do know the tracks and when you do that stuff you only make yourself look like a fool
But then again, if I didn't have what it takes to more forward I'd probably do the same... then again, maybe I don't...

I have decks and ableton.
I think this whole, Ableton dj's are fakes etc etc even if they don't have decks is abit far off to be honest.
The thing is, yes, it does matter what tracks you play, it does matter what order you play them in, it does matter how you react to the crowd! But what ableton allows dj's and musicians to do, is, do it differently. Mixing old obscure rock tracks with new breakz tracks etc etc. Its about getting into the groove and experimenting, yeah ok, theres nothing like spinning vinyl but the possibilities with ableton are endless, different. if your just going to play tracks straight from ableton then theres not much point. But, if its messed up, unique, as long as it rocks the joint, does it matter what you use?
throw away the DJ manual and get out of the old routine, invent your own DJ manual and re-invent!
Whoops, got abit deep then! but you know what i mean!

This whole thread is a bit far off. There really is no need to prove the ligitimacy of djing over and over and over again. It's funny how people who are otherwise pretty open minded and progressive can become so backwards and close minded with their "dj's are a joke" mentality.voodoo23 wrote:I think this whole, Ableton dj's are fakes etc etc even if they don't have decks is abit far off to be honest.
Anyone willing to make such broad generalisations is not to be taken seriously.
