I've heard reports on the forums of security updates slowing down people's computers but don't know if there's any truth to it. Doesn't sound right to me.

I never understood why security updates can cause problems. And if they do cause problems with music programs, why should "power users" download them? Are they a necessary evil for people who only use their computers for internet heavily and pull up questionable random websites? What does a security update do specifically? Is there any possible benefit of a security update to the stability of music software? And finally, if I don't download it, am I increasing my vulnerability to viruses or whatever?

There is little to no detail from apple about what "security" features are being updated. I've been downloading them because apple "tells me to do it" in software update but I have no idea what I'm downloading.

I quit the updates unless I am told it does a major fix I need or
major speed bump..Other than that, I stick to the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"

The macfixit site mentioned that 10.4.3 screwed up the M-audio drivers, so m-audio interface users beware

. Currently my M-audio Delta 66 is working pretty well under 10.4.2, so I guess I'll just stick with this version until M-audio updates their drivers.

I have always been careful with Apple updates.
Sometimes they can cause more damage than good.
If a version works well, I could care less or wait until others go first
as I cannot risk the damage time.

I'm using 10.4.3 now and my m-audio device seems to be working fine. I was reading that some users had problems but my firewire 410 seems fine. though I haven't tried the midi yet. but audio is great.

the only change I've seen so far is that I used to see that the drag bar in safari would show "drag marks" if that makes sense. not always but it did now and then which bugged me. since the update I haven't seen that.

My M-Audio pops and clicks that were around in 10.4.2 are still there in 10.4.3.

I don't trust the M-Audio stuff any more. I think it's systematically trashing the Firewire in my Mac.

I hope to have better luck with Yamaha's mLAN stuff.

I don't really think it's maudio causing problems for people. most people probably just need to download updated drivers and adjust the buffer in the program and presto it'll probably work fine. though I could be wrong.

This thread talks about a workaround by rolling back to the 2.01 M-Audio driver.

Anyone have any word on whether the UC33e is affected? Mine is working just fine in 10.2...
