This is probably the best trance sounding synth I've heard in softsynths. Only in Reaktor though. This synth is asking for a number one. lol

It's all digital in the end... even 100% analog dinosaurs... unless you're recording to tape, going straight to vinyl or staying at tape, and listening with an analog desk/amp.

Vangaurd is tought to beat for trance. Doesn't seem like it would much good for anything else, but it's got the whole trance sitch on lockdown.

Yeah, I'd 2nd that. I sold my copy, but it's a trance monster... has the gate and all as well as the sound.

Linplug's albino is the tranciest synth I've heard. Rob Papen's blue is good too (he co-designed albino with linplug).

Actually, I'm not even a fan of trance, but I think that Both of these synths sound amazing. I used to have albino, and I was amazed by it, but it always sounded too trancy to me, so I didn't end up using it as much as other stuff. I like blue better, because to me, it seems more versatile.

I would definitely download demos of both if it's trance you're into.

I'm surprised no one mentioned White Noise Zero Vector. That thing was modeled after the Virus C and has the phattest Unison mode I've heard on a soft...right up there with Z3ta.

Also, check out the V-Station and the Discovery synths. Both have phatter sounds than Vanguard, especially with the Vengeance presets.

As for hardware, I agree that they sound meatier, but then how much meat do you really need in the mix? I think the day of softsynths has come, and the sounds you can get with software can definitely make a good mix in the hands of a skillful producer without needing analog. (apologies in advance to Andromeda owners

i totally agree, some of the best sounding stuff right now is all plugs and nobody is the wiser, even analog freaks

Albino - very trancey

Despite Sweet Jesus being on an anti-Armin van Buuren "he uses a Virus and listen how thin his music is" kick, I'll throw his two cents right back..

Armin uses a Nord Lead 3, Virus C, Andromeda, JP8080, Moog Voyager, Logic 7 soft synths, Pro Tools, and more (see his web site). To pigeon-hole the Virus and say "That's why Armin's music is so thin, because he uses a Virus" is just plain stupid. There are plenty of people using a Virus with thick sounds, thin sounds, medium sounds, pianos, guitars, pads, stabs, it's whatever they want it to be. Otherwise, you would be indicating that the Andromeda and Moog Voyager as being thin synths too, because they appear on his productions. I can't believe the statement "I kow some girl who is signed with his label and tours with him and sees him in his studio and he uses the Virus almost always". It would be naive to say all the negative things about Armin's music based on one person's claim that of all the equipment in his studio he almost always uses the Virus. In fact, when I mentioned he has an Andromeda and Nord 3 the comment I got back was "Yeah but he hardly uses those" - says who? That girl? There are plenty of interviews with Armin that contradict her claims, but that's beside the point.

Tiesto uses a Virus KC, Andromeda, and Moog Voyager and his mixes sound completely different than Armin's. I'm not going to judge whether either of their music is good or bad, but the point is the same three synths are used by both artists (among others) and you (SJ) said "Tiesto's mixes sound good to me" - so whattup with that, B'YATCH! j/k

So..me and SJ had it out because I'm adding a TI to the studio and he tried very hard to talk me out of it. In the end, if someone told me they were buying a synth because it's what they wanted, I'd be happy for them. It's not my place to interject and spend an hour down playing the whole thing.

I have a virus Indigo 2 and I reckon it sounds ace... but there's still some stuff my bass station can smoke it on. Those big deep deep basslines with resonance at halfway and cut-off down real low which just roll along (my old MC-202 used to be good for this stuff too), really smooth but powerfull. I just can't get the virus to do a good impersonation, I think it's the filter which isn't quite up to it. If the Virus TI has a new filter it might be different....

Aside from the sound quality issue, what about control?

Sure, you can map parameters of you soft synth to your midi controller, but you only have 128 steps of control and you don't have an interface that visually corresponds to what you are doing. This is one of hardware's big advantages.
