get some midi files from groovemonkey . Dont just use them but try to analise them also visually it may help you to understand some more about drums
To get decent drum sound of jazzy kind you need at least Reason Drum Kits or similar like Battery or Spectratronics - whatever it is called.
Ride is really quality demanding, unfortunately no cheap solution for that in both aspects how and what is played. Though I am percussionist myself, for the ride prefer getting proper drummer

And I've NEVER heard a recording of any type that can reproduce the sound of a live ride cymbal. It's just never right. Why is that?

Overtones richness, for digital anyway it is overdosis of information. It is exactly where any sound reproduction sucks but digital in particular. Probably a 2 inch 2 track, some 10 000 $ mic and esoteric preamp would be the closest you could get, but even then....

I like the drum parts...
I'm a drummer and have been for many a band (jazz included), and what i find interesting in your track is that it doesn't use a typical drum part that a seasoned drummer would play. that's exactly what makes it interesting. keep it up. if you really crave a 'real drum feel', pm me and i would be happy to record some for you, but i don't think you need it.

Live's velocity device (with randomization), and Random device are great for Jazz.

thanks for the offer but yeah, i don't need it. i don't need loops. i'm a little crazy when it comes to drums in my tunes. i have to have them made 100% by myself. for everything else i might throw in a loop or two.

Well to clarify the point of my post wasn't really time period inaccuracy, but that this piece really isn't what you'd hear from a jazz band. From the sound of your intro, it sounds like your going for a small jazz quartet sound, but you don't really have that from. Generally said pieces would have the bad playing a 'head' which would be the real song (ie the chord progression and melody), and then they'd go through the chord changes a few times, with each member trading off with solos, and then at the end they'd all return to the head one last time. Imo the interactions between the different players during the solos are really what makes jazz what it is.

I'm not slagging your tune or anything (I'm listening to it right now and quite enjoying it), I'm just saying it's pretty distinct from what I'd associate with jazz.

I've been drumming for about five years now, but I am by no means a "seasoned drummer." Personally, one of the things that I love the most about Live is it's ability to do things that are impossible on a kit.

I would also agree that what you were doing was interesting and I like it. It is really hard once you have drums not to try and sound like anyone else. It can drive you mad. I once lived with an ex-girlfiend who felt awkward being around me after an evening off of work with the drums. Stick to your vision and your sampling.

If you vision a drummer with four arms, consider the possibility of giving them a fifth, however, also take into consideration the benefits of a drummer with only one.
