the burgh is nice and chill. Not much of an electronic music "scene" anymore, but I could really care less......I can drive to NYC or Toronto or Detroit or D.C. or Baltimore or Philly or Cleveland or Columbus or even CHI-town if I wanna go to a show.....The RENT here is nice and CHEAP. That's my #1 priority.....
For electronic music, I'd recommend a place called Berlin.... it's on a little continent called "Europe" ;-) ;-)

I used to spend a lot of time in NYC when I was younger. I have many good memories and a lot of experiences. I have missed it since I moved to the west coast 16 yrs ago. I have to say this last trip back on halloween was dissapointing. I really wanted to touch base with artists and musicians and found virtually none of that. The party scene wasn't so great either unless you like spending 20 bucks to get into some small bar and then another 6 bucks just for a red bull. I got back to Eugene to find I had missed some really great parties. Go figure. NYC has changed a lot though. It's so shiny and tidy in NYC nowadays. I miss seeing car skeletons and graffiti. It's like the city lost it's color and soul. Brooklyn was the same. About half of the people I ran into were to cool for school. I even had to check this guys attitude at a record shop because he would not play any used records that were under 5 bucks. Get real. I did meet some great people from other countries though.

Maybe you should've torched some cars while you were here.

I love this place. If you're not cut from a certain cloth, you won't like it here.

I agree that much of it has become an oversized wealthy people's playground. That's not what I love about it. I love the flavor.

The soul of New York City is intact and alive + well. I get reaffirmed of this everytime I walk down its streets and feel its energy. That's the blood flowing in its veins, and that has not changed.

If you come here looking for something that was here 16 years ago you are sure to be disappointed.

It's too expensive for me now and I still think it's a great city, but nowhere as cool as it used to be. Period. It's a yuppie playground, and I'm just poor white trash. Not for me anymore.....I hate yuppies and I hate trust fund kids that hang out and try to act like they are down.....they think having mommy and daddy's money to buy all the latest fashion trends automatically makes them "HIP".....they're called hipsters and NYC is over run by them and I HATE THEM ALL............... That city could care less about it's artists and musicians anymore (unless they are RICH!!!).......besides, almost all of my friends left for the same reason I did after coming to the same conclusions I did: NYC is no place for the little guy with big dreams.

I dunno, err.

I don't concern myself with thinking about who is paying whoever's rent.

This town was built by dreamers, and that isn't any different today. It's always been a struggle to get by here. You know the Frank Sinatra song. Most of the people I know and most of the people I meet are big dreamin' little guys + gals.

Don't get me wrong I still think it is a great city. It is just different now. It feels like someone took the spice rack out of the kitchen is all. There are still amazing opportunities and people as well. I just wasn't seeing it on the street. I did hang out in the warehouse of these guys who were making a sci fi movie. They turned their whole loft into the bridge of a space ship. That alone was almost worth the trip. I did get some bomb records and met a really cool guy in Brooklyn too. I've got signed copies of Eric B and Rakim's The Ghetto thanks to him.

I guess I just miss some of the riff raff.

it basically boils down to the insane increase in RENT in the East Village and Williamsburg the past couple years. Those are the only areas of the city I would ever care to live in....the west village/greenwich and soho are nice to but way more expensive. It's just become even shittier to try to make it there if you aren't loaded.

If you come to Balt. or DC I suggest you not mention your ableton forum name. Not a threat from me, just a cold shoulder.

I'm so glad that others are chiming in about how much NYC sucks these days. I agree with everyone of your points. I could write a novel (and illustrate it. In fact I have already started.)

Oh, and I have to agree- Pittsburgh is the shiznit. It's like brooklyn in the eighties, or at least as close to it as I can remember.

Well I've always wanted to go there since I was about 12 yrs.
I'm hope it's not as wack from a tourists point of view as it you all seem to say it is from a residents. And as for being expensive, try living in London.....
