thanks man!

I think it's just experience. I can talk all day about trying to mix in a way that keeps each element nestled in it's own frequency range, and about using buss compression / distortion / delay to add polish and depth but at the end of the day i think it just comes to doing it over and over again and listening really intently.

I've been doing this stuff for ages (maybe 12 years or so?), and i'm still not even close to where i'd like to be in terms of mixing.

yeah, strunk is a mess. I'll get around to fixing that asap, but that one is really tough without monitors. I mean, there's just so much bass going on, and its stepping all over itself. plus the drum kit part of the drums that i'm using for the beat were really poorly recorded in a hurry. so they sound kind of bad up against the really crisp synth drums. Also, i've listened to it so much now that i can't even hear it. Will come back to it next month.

(the saddest part about this no monitors situation is that i actually finally got a decent set last summer, but then had to leave them in Maine when i moved. Now i could get them shipped to me, but i'm living in a spot where i can't ever really make noise. SHIT!!! I've got to get my shit together, my debts paid off, and my ass out to the bay where you are like i planned on a freakin year ago.)

haha.. aw man, i know its tough to get those debts in control. and believe me when i say it'll be easier to do NOT living in the bay. shit is criminaly expensive here! it'll still be here when you're ready.

im spending more time lately trying to experiment with the sound spectrum and placing sounds within a mix. Im really finding that its crucuial and makes the big difference in how the tune sounds. ear fatigue plays a big part too as you mentioned and i get bored quick with projects. I've been fiddlin with music for about 3 years now and havent really finished a single "song"!!! now THAT is pathetic. haha. but im having fun, so thats somethin.

good luck to you
