I've been trying to get my head around PD recently, managed to get some bizarre noises out of it by hacking aroung in some example presets, but that's about it.
Do you know any good beginner tutorials for it? I have no programming experience at all.

Download the Max/MSP demo and go through the tutorials that come with that... Max/MSP and Pd are pretty much the same.

That link wil show you the awesome amount of stuff in that book. Besides the 740 page book itself, it comes with two CDROMs packed with information, hundreds of CSound compositions, and audio files. I've made 7 audio CDs of the files from those to listen to in my car over time. Search
http://www.labyrinthbooks.com for ISBN 0262522616 and you should be able to get a copy for $22. I think they're shelfworn but as long as they have the two CDs you will have months of delving to do.
(I think I read on the CSound forum that they are releasing a new version of those CD-ROMs with a second printing of the book...)
Other people in this thread are recommending Pd and ChucK which I have not checked out very deeply, but the price is certainly right for them too...

yeah, except you'll get used to all the lovely externals and that way of working, and the tutorials and reference manual... and then you switch to PD
