What sub would go well with the Genelecs?
I wish they didn't look so silly.

I haven't heard enough of the cheaper subs to make a suggestion. But, taking a quick glance at what was available, it just seems much smarter to hide away $20 a week until you can go get a Genelec 7050B for $999.Sales Dude McBoob wrote:The bass response from the 8020 is pretty amazing without the sub. Yes, you're much better off with the sub, but honestly I would rather use the 8020s without a sub than use any other system of lesser value. The bass response from the 8000 series Genelecs always amazes the customers. When I demo them I'll start off without the sub. The first question they always ask is if they can hear them with the sub turned off. Then I tell them the sub is already off. Then their eyes go. Then they ask if they can hear them with the sub turned on. Then I turn on the sub. Then they ask me if I turned on the sub correctly because they can't hear it. Then I tell them that you arn't supposed to hear it > unless there is a mistake in the mix > a low frequency that was inaudible on the main monitors, but that we are listening to a professional mixed CD and the lows are clean. Then they don't believe me so I have to show them the light is on on the sub. Then they put their hands on it and feel it vibrate slightly and they say "oooh..."
Get the feeling I've done this my fair share of times? You kind of feel like a waiter when you're demoing monitors...
Anyways, yes, the sub would be amazing to have to hear the mistakes in the sub frequencies. But, do not think of the Genelec sub as the booty bass machine... you will be sadly dissapointed if you plop down the cash for one and > set it up properly in your room (tune the room properly). The system is an amazing tool for tracking + mixing, and if one day you want to step up to a surround sound system you'd have among the best systems in the world for this job.
That said, again, I would rather use the 8020s without a sub than use cheap monitors. As far as using a cheaper sub with the 8020?? Well, it would be okay to use on occasion... you know, like turn it on every once in a while when you want to check the low freqs or when you want to indulge in some booty-b, but I wouldn't get too used to how that would sound. A Genelec rep would never recoemmend that, but as long as you didn't listen to the mix critically while it was on you'd be okay.
Phew!

i hear you, i think as well that dynaudios, adam and also PMC are very excellent monitors, i have worked often with them and genelecs. (in studios)I'm torn. I also love the Dynaudio BM6 and the A.D.A.M. P-11A.SubFunk wrote:
