There shouldn't be any problems running windows programs. The MacTel is a PC beneath the hood.

thats what im thinking so I dont really see this as a mega revelation. I thought this was going to be a foregone conclusion.

The Intel virtualisation technology on the Intel Mac machines already supports this. If Apple choose to support such operation then it could be done.
I have already seen suggestions that dual operation will be supported under Panther.

this is fucking huge. this could change everything.
it will be the only real machine taht offers duel booting.
why not get a mac now? really is there anything anyone can say to NOT get one?
its time to drop some cash on apple stocks my friends.

so who here with a macbook is gonna try it out?
make sure you carbon copy clone your drive and back it up first...
just in case.
looks like the bootcamp app will resize your hdd for you without
having to reformat it.. but it's better to be safe then sorry.

looks like I may have to buy win xp ...i got a laptop with xp pro, but its only on recovery discs ... not sure if you can use them to go and install winxp on any machine other then when recovering the laptop from disaster.

Generally you can't as the recovery disks are built for the hardware config of the machine that they were purchased with. That said you may be able to tweak the install scripts. I've seen it done but not always with success. I guess it depends on what company put the disks together too. I recall HP and Dell disks being ultra proprietary. I'd say it would be worth more just to get a fresh install of XP Pro. Time vs Money and all.
All this news has made me look real seriously at the macbooks. I could use all my pc vsts to create and then print them to audio and port them over to the OSX side. That would be very good for me.

the insanely high price for a macbook pro. you can buy 2 (two) dual core pc notebooks for the price of 1 (one) macbook pro. And if you need osx that bad, just install it on one of the pc notebooks... lol it's easy! Although if the macbook pro was $1399'ish I'd definitely buy one. But $2000 for a base model is just WAY to high.

XPHome is perfectly adequate for most of our purposes and is a hell of a lot cheaper than 'pro'
unless you really
want IIS running on your music machine, in which case get Pro

I would probably still install just OSX --- but it's great news nevertheless. Great success for Apple, very savy business move.

i agree in a sense, I think the whole laptop/macbook thing is one of the biggest myths in music making...most novices I've met think thats the way to go without thinking it out, speaking from my own experience anyways....
pick up an imac mactel, its much cheaper then the macbook and I got a fully spec'd pimped out fully covered etc etc imac for 2,500 euro ....the macbook equivilant is closer to 4 grand, and will have performance issues that the imac wont.
plus you can get apple approved gig-bags for the imacs for 90 dollars, with backstraps and screen protection. I see so many musicians lugging around loads of stuff, and then they shell out for a laptop/macbook as if thats going to improve their mobility situation, but looks kool ...or is the 'standard' thing to do
of course I'm only talking about people who are relegated to moving equipment with a vehicle one way or the other.

... not sure it's a great buy just now - it's up 10% today alone (pushing 70 bucks again)
I bought my apple stock a year ago, when it was in the lowly 30's
