the solution I've chosen is creating live clips of all slots and using the browser rather than having all clips already in the set, this way the RAM use should be small. I've spent all day yesterday doing that, hope that works.

Another thing to consider with your hard drive that may help...make sure it has been formatted using the largest cluster size possible. You will sacrafice some disk space, but you will have better performance with large audio files:

"Data from hard discs is read one cluster (allocation unit) at a time. This would mean that a disc with 4KB clusters would read 4KB at a time. Therefore, a 128KB file would require 32 separate discs I/O's. If the same file was stored on a disc that had been formatted with 64KB clusters, then only 2 discs I/O's would be necessary."

You may get much better disk streaming performance. (Also, don't forget to defrag.)

I have no idea how the hard drive was formatted.
It worked flawlessly with the 4200RPM internal HD with live 4 and chokes on a 7200RPM NTFS formatted with live 5
