Actually I'm getting quite confused now, the original post is a bit ambiguous.

I took this:

to mean that the preamp was a separate piece of equipment (if you turn off the power to the 410 it will go CRUNCH and stop working pronto).

But maybe what was meant is that the mic keeps working for a few seconds when the phantom power is turned off, in which case the noise is almost certainly coming via the phantom power - which will ultimately be derived from the laptop power supply if using bus power.
maybe the solution is to use the wall wart power supply for the 410 and a 4 pin firewire cable.

I've always noticed that when you turn off phantom power there will be a couple seconds of auidio until the cap's dissipate. that's normal

i get this sound when i have preamps turned on.and it also disappears for half seconds when i turn output signal level controller
