Engineers would probably tell you that Alphas and SGIs were the first "desktop" 64 bit workstations.

AMD's SPEC numbers leave out a lot and seem flaky. Apple doesn't make a 3 GHz P4, for one. And there is no cost or performance comparison made between dual Opterons and dual G5s.

It's besides the point anyway, because even when August comes around, when we can try Live on the new machines, the only realistic comparison at that time will be a box with one or more Xeons or one P4.

Do you know how difficult it is to find the web page for Windows' 64 bit clean OS? Why is Microsoft so reluctant to make this product visible?
There is no 64bit desktop or server version of windows for X86-64 yet. The point was that the hardware is already available, it is 100% compatible with 32bit windows and programs and performs fantastically.
Who uses Opteron as a desktop processor?
I don't know, but what difference does it make?
Opterons cost more per processor than Xeons. If a dual-processor Mac is cheaper than a dual-processor Xeon where does that leave Opteron users?
2x AMD Opteron 1.8GHZ $1664

MSI K8D Master-F $453

SEAGATE 160GB ST3160023A $166

Samsung 512MB PC3200 $72

Sony DRU510A DVD+RW/+R/-RW/-R/CD-RW $290

Nice Case with Powersupply $200

Total: $2845

With a single Opteron the total is: $2013
Do you want to discuss per-chip cost of Itaniums, etc.?
No I don't.
Where is the upgrade path for people who want to use 64 bit desktop applications on an Opteron? Apparently Microsoft Windows 2003 won't even provide support for this chip.
Of course it will.
So:

Apple users can tell Windows users with a straight face that they are behind -- and probably will be until Microsoft provides a realistic upgrade plan and vendors can provide better, cheaper hardware. For now, Apple is ahead of the game.
If it makes you feel better, then okay. I don't agree.
I'm not flexing off on Opterons etc. -- go right ahead and use them if you want, though I have no idea *why* you would -- but I am simply happy to see that my platform of choice is something I no longer have to apologize for.
If I currently needed more performance than I would use an Opteron system, but I'm quite comfortable with what I have.

Cheers

That's not true.

Apple tweaking their benchmarks? Interesting reading nevertheless. Let the flaming begin. :D

put it like this. the mac users started this war along time ago and they are the ones who always get bent out of shape over it, here's the facts.
the leap that the new G5s have over the current pc desktops is no big deal
and they're shakin in their boots, cause they know that in a few minutes compared to how long apple makes you wait, that AMD and InteL are going to wipe their arses with the new G5s top of the line specs. It's just a fact of nature and they'll be right back down to where they started, they're like the Iraqi army compared to the coalition forces and after AMD and InteL come out with their next thing apple will be making its customers
wait 10 years for another meaningful upgrade, while again like always AMD and Intel will be coming out with asskicking upgrades every 6 months
PCs have the money the power and the know how and apple has been playing catch up since it first dropped the ball way back when. Thats why I
laugh when ever I read the pc bashing by mac users and this must be why
they are so proud of having macs.

1. ibooks are made by a low budget pc manufacturer called azrock and they make pcs, asus mother boards too so all that so called great mac quality comes from a lowbudget pc maker. (lol)

2. Bill Gates owns more stock of apple than steve jobs does, and saved their ass out of courtesy else he'd be called Steve Jobless hahahah

3. now apples most shining moment where they prove that their spiritual leader was right and that if you use a mac you'll go to heaven is only marred by the fact that the new G5 Had to practically become a PC to even get here. The only thing left on the macs now that are actualy apples
will be the logo and the os, everything else is pc, and osx is still gonna be compared to winxp when microsoft already has long horn waiting in the wings to pounce on anything that osx could actualy be if one day it was what they preach about in church, so in short even when macs are ahead
they are still generations behind and are nothing more than PCs in disguise. It took them a lifetime to figure out if they wanted to make an impression they needed to just go ahead and let pc chipmakers make their chips and let pc hardware makers make their hardware, and still it'll only take a week or so before not one, but multiple pcs come out that blow
the G5 to the point of it being insignificant. So be merry macdaddys, cause
at the stroke of midnight you know what happens to cinderella. hahahahaha
now of course my post drips with sarcasm, but that's just because I'm a Arse if I get up before noon, but if you can put that aside for a moment every thing i've said is true.

don't pay him any mind folks, my partner is a knucklehead that doesn't understand the value of having both platforms, I on the other hand (the real Mic-Minimal do and cannot wait til the new g5 laptops come out, but if they don't give any word of them on the next big announcement I will have to go for a g4.

It's not a flame-war, just a comparison of differing views. It's just such good sport winding Macophile types up about their iDonkeys cos they're soooooooooo touchy and start stamping their feet, quote Photoshop benchmarks, that kinda stuff!! Now they get the chance to put down enough money as a downpayment for a property so they can have 32 extra bits no one is gonna be able to use in any useful way for at least a year. Flame-war?? It's f^&£*n' hilarious!!!!!

No fish support, but it makes a lovely cheese grater!

All's we need next is GewurtzTraminer 3.7 and Baguette 5.2 and we're set.

Dunno, but there's already something smelly about this absolute will to be superiour and the way it is promoted.

The first one who finally owns the G5 may post a usual LIVE benchmark, and we'll compare - if we're interested.

Frasier

Why are there so many morons on this forum?

Logic-users yahoo, motu-mac yahoo, digidesign's duc, sospubs, daw-mac:
all these forums have intelligent posters

This forum is disgusting. I've been checking it out lately because I am getting into Live. Do yourselves a favor, and restrain the moronic comments. Unfortunately, those guilty of this do not recognize it as stupid, for you would not even consider responding in such a low-brow way to begin with. (Please excuse my anger; I've skimmed through too many mac versus pc sex arguments, and got fed up.) (I have confirmed what I assumed which is Live allows non-musicians to make music. And I assume that in the DJ culture, this idiotic interchange is desirable. And that I am too much of a stiff, with too much academic training; which I am trying to shed.) I just figure this forum would be more useful if it focused on quality arguments.

Hey Mr Frasier

I agree there have been too many PC vs Mac talks going on here, but I dont know what you are trying to say...
Live allows non-musicians to make music
What is this? I might be stupid (probably are since Im frequent on this forum...) but I thought making music was about creativity. using the voice ocr some instrument or tool to express what humanity is about. My main tools for this is my voice, a djembe, a K-Station and Live.

Is Live making musicality and creativity easier? Yes.

I think you should read the other thousands of inspiring, good, helping quality posts here instead of complaining about the few pointless...
