are live DJ's frontin? what to do with the spare time?
To be honest that disc flipping, searching for the disc in a box, shaking head, putting arms or fist in the air is so done to death and only real mentally challanged groupies ( on drugs) may find it exciting. What was new 20 or more years ago does not thrill anyone anyway. People should move on
I saw Svan Vath on TV and the light show was amazing, but what a fuck was he doing to be worshipped like God, nothing against my Frankfurt homie but I just could not see, hear anything divine there. It was very professional and all but my impression was that he must be bored doing same shit for 20 years.
It is like those idiots pacifists who run at Bob Dylan in rage with an axe just because he played Strat ( saw the Scorsese film last night). Poor Joan Baez didnt get it even 30 years later what does it mean to be real artist.
Man dont bother about other DJs or musicians, whoever, they dont even pay the gate, Enjoy the freedom you have, like Hambone says, damn I wish myself to have more "free time" do do also some visuals, but I am busy enough on stage.

It depends. You can pull it off with people looking if you have a really hardcore image. If not then don't try it.

True, but you could really re-invent the hand in the air fist pumping if you incorporated the butt-scratch finger sniff.rikhyray wrote: shaking head, putting arms or fist in the air is so done to death and only real mentally challanged groupies ( on drugs) may find it exciting.
Like, you could stand up on a speaker and shake your ass at the crowd, shove both hands down your pants and scratch your butt crack, then turn around and do the hand in the air fist pump.
Shit man, sorry I just woke up. I'm going to go get an egg sandwich now.

he...spare time? that cracked me up...
i am running through tunes looking for another one, tweaking filters and effects with my controller the whole time. using mute buttons as "fader cuts", turning eqs on and off...changing loop points, dropping in loops over tunes, rearranging tunes and throwing on drum hits.
i still mostly dj vinyl, but i have been having fun with a different genre by using ableton. the stuff i have been playing is not always as dj friendly as my good old techno, so i make custom edits, loop bits and usually have 3 or 4 things going at the same time.
i am incapable of dealing with boredom, so i have do be doing SOMETHING the entire time.

If you want to follow round the booth idea, check these moves from a friend of mine (really nice person, good singer though perhaps not the brightest bulb- Sikhs are Indian equivalent of Polish in US).

Check the original first if you find it difficult check "versions" on the same page like of Nathan Zumauk

I rarely take risks in life so djing / performing with LIVE is something I do alone when no one is looking
but - your show can be as elaborate or minimal as you like
If I were to do a LIVE show it would be more midified than anything - midi out to synths for real time tweaking, out to tone generators and efx's
that way you're not tied down to your laptop - you can just jam on a synth
Another really cool idea is to get a dj to scratch over your shit - a good dj, you can record that shit on the fly, effect it out and replay it and scratch over his / her shit
a light or video controller on board never hurt
it's really up to you and what you
When I dj I do the typical "Oh where's that one record" shit but I also do cool shit like double beat records, scratch right into the mix (that's fun) and make sure my eq cuts are heard not just seen
I also interact with the sound and light guys - I like it dark dark dark dark and I like the beats punchy with lots of mid range and bass - plus the super sharp highs to cut
I hate lazers in small clubs
you get the idea - if you're naturally a boring person your shows are going to be boring, if you got a little flair you'll make sure your shows have some flair
coming from a dj / promoter background I know how this works

that must make some amazing radio shows !hambone1 wrote:Apart from just playing tracks, I'm VJing and doing lights (both under Live control)
Now we need someone to invent some kind of radio but with images that you could see from your home. Sort of like a small cinema screen. I'm sure there's a market here.
Quad 6600 Intel, AsusP5Q, 2Gb ram, XP sp3, Evolution MK361c & UC33e, Line6 UX8
I use a Machinedrum in my sets now, so I can sample, program and tweak that over the set. Fun stuff.

Re: are live DJ's frontin? what to do with the spare time?
It is embarassing and it doesnt matter what you do with the tracks. This is obvious yet only Live users are constantly trying to pass it off as art. The fact of the matter is no beatmatching or dj experience is nescessary with live so how do all these live DJs expect to be treated when the other djs have practiced for years on vinyl and learned their craft while mr or mrs cheater turns up and presses play on a computer running live. They will laugh and snigger behind your back and even the audience dont particularly respect Live software djs when they are told the scoop. Never underestimate your punters!D DAS wrote: but now i have a radio station here i can play on every week. which is cool. but personaly i think it is kinda embarrasing showin up with a computer to play tracks.?
The only djs who can get off using Live are the famous djs. for The unknown rest have to prove themselves 100 times more than those djs just as its always been and your not going to do that playing with Live on a computer.
Serato and final scratch has been accepted by the dj people but Live hasnt despite what live users try and claim.
Was that really neagative

Re: are live DJ's frontin? what to do with the spare time?
sorry but this is the exact opposite of my experience as an ableton dj, most people I know are stoked that I don't trainwreck, I also spend a lot of time mixing in loops and whatnot and have even got comments that I look like I'm working harder than the vinyl dj's (I don't neccessarily believe this), also most accomplished vinyl dj's I know (quite a few) have been stoked and interested and a couple have started incorporating live into their sets since I started doing this. I've only ever gotten shit from dj's who are insecure in their own *status* as djsmercyplease wrote:It is embarassing and it doesnt matter what you do with the tracks. Incidentally just got booked for my biggest gig ever, outdoor party on the west coast of Vancouver island in July HUGE soundsystem, nobody seems to mind the fact I'm using a laptop, and I know I'm getting paid just as much, and I'm far from famous.
Oh and I practiced for years and years to learn to play CDJ's, but I don't want anything to do with them now, I provide a better experience for my punters with live than I ever did spinning cd's.
yes you are a negative nancy.
