I would absolutely not recommend the Firewire410. I've had loads of problems with it which are totally inexplicable. I've sent it back three times for repairs. I know I'm not alone in this, it has to be one of the most criticised interfaces around - check out some forum posts here and at MacMusic.

It's a shame as it would be great if it was more reliable.

i don't know what the FW1814 is like, but for some reason I get the impression it is better.

that's probably because the FW1814 isn't as popular? The fw410 has got to be one of the most popular interfaces on the planet, so of course you're going to hear more people complaining about it, right?

not necessarily. with m-audio people complain a lot about the quality of their products whether popular or not. they have a reputation, know what i'm saying?

yup. I do. But I think they're still getting a bad rep at least partly because of the sheer volume of sold units.

I had a FW410 and I took it back

A) because I couldn't figure out how to turn off the stupid blue light

B) I didn't need that many in's and out's

C) I was feeling the Mbox more

still ended up with the Fast Track Pro which is a tight little unit - not as Transparent in my set-up as the Mbox but it does what it says it will

The bloody thing doesn't have that many in's ..It claims 4 in's but that is a misnomer... It only has 2 in's.. 2 analogue or 2 digital at one given time...

well I've had my FW410 for maybe 3 years now and it has served me fine - the blue light doesnt bother me because if my computer's not on the power pouint gets switched off (which you should do with laptops)

as for hot swapping - I find I have to on the PC if I use the stupid 4 pin FW port because it loses connection so easily (fault of the FW port not the 410) so I just got a PCMCIA ->FW adapter which is fine

As a crude rule of thumb, sound travels about 1 foot per millisecond. If you're not aware of any latency when playing guitar duets with someone sitting across the room, then 10ms of latency is probably not going to disturb you. YMMV, as usual.

I've used the Firewire 410 for quite a while and been happy with the audio, but early on I found the MIDI driver unreliable with respect to timing, so I don't use the MIDI ports. There may be a newer driver that fixes the problem.
