i wasn't going to keep this going, but i gotta ask...you haven't upgrade any hardware in your system or re-installed your os in five years??? also, are you using a mac and is the cloning and hardware changes easier somehow?
though i know i re-install my system more than most, i'm curious how you haven't had to in so long...

I have upgraded hardware. I have added RAM once in the last 5 years. I have a 933 G4 Powermac that has ran fine. Every once in a while, I go into my Disk Utility and clean up a bit. I have had sort of one crash (bad 2nd hard drive) and had to boot from an original OS disk. None of these problems have caused me to have to re-install Live... What kind of hardware would I have to install that would make me need a new Ableton Live code? I have not upgraded Live since I went from 1.5 to 2. I don't really havve a use right now for using midi channels and I honestly like the simplicity of Live 2. Wouldn't mind the vsti support but I use alot of external hardware synths and record them directly as audio channels and manipulate from there...
I think Abletons policy is fine. I will be looking at picking up a new machine (Macbook) sometime soon and I'll bet if I contact Ableton asking for a new code, I shouldn't have any problem getting one.
I can't imagine another software company (Sony's Acid comes to mind) or Cakewalk issuing out 10 response codes in under a year. Something tells me they wouldn't even bother replying to your emails and asking why you need the codes. They would more then likely ignore you.
I have never had to copy or clone my hard drive. If one day I wake up and boot my machine and everything just flat out disapears I guess I'm fucked. I'll take my chances and just simply run a "tight ship" and back up important stuff the traditional way. I'm only really using this machine to produce on and exchange emails, etc.
I guess I would just suggest to try and keep things simple when and if Ableton suppllies you with another response code.
