WTF does this mean, expiration of the unlock?
copy protection is a pain. but kind of like wearing a seatbelt, or health insurance, you really should get used to it...
and as far as i know, if you dont replace any major hardware, you can use the same unlock on a reinstalled OS, without cloning. someone correct me if im wrong.
oh, and before i plopped down $500 on something, i made sure i had a decent grasp on how the copy protection worked.
wrong about the os re-install, on windows at least. new unlock is needed no matter what. as far as, expiration of unlocks...i mean without having to contact them, which can sometimes be troublesome.
as far as me not knowing about the copy protection before purchase. you're right...i was just starting to buy alot of software at that time and i didn't know better, but i learned quickly. oh well, hopefully norton ghost will work in the morning. hopefully they will let me unlock again. i wish that there would have been some understanding and i obviously wish there was more support from the community to change this. copy protection is fine, but without people wanting a more efficient system, there is no reason to build it.

'nuff said.
i wasn't going to keep this going, but i gotta ask...you haven't upgrade any hardware in your system or re-installed your os in five years??? also, are you using a mac and is the cloning and hardware changes easier somehow?
though i know i re-install my system more than most, i'm curious how you haven't had to in so long...

Stop reinstalling your OS and you'll be fine.
Why they hell would you resinstall an OS anyway, just keep it running clean.
Can't bitch bout needing to get new license keys when you're the one
reinstalling all the time.

I create ghost images up to twice a month. Store the last three + the original, spanning multiple DVDs. No problems.

I have upgraded hardware. I have added RAM once in the last 5 years. I have a 933 G4 Powermac that has ran fine. Every once in a while, I go into my Disk Utility and clean up a bit. I have had sort of one crash (bad 2nd hard drive) and had to boot from an original OS disk. None of these problems have caused me to have to re-install Live... What kind of hardware would I have to install that would make me need a new Ableton Live code? I have not upgraded Live since I went from 1.5 to 2. I don't really havve a use right now for using midi channels and I honestly like the simplicity of Live 2. Wouldn't mind the vsti support but I use alot of external hardware synths and record them directly as audio channels and manipulate from there...
I think Abletons policy is fine. I will be looking at picking up a new machine (Macbook) sometime soon and I'll bet if I contact Ableton asking for a new code, I shouldn't have any problem getting one.
I can't imagine another software company (Sony's Acid comes to mind) or Cakewalk issuing out 10 response codes in under a year. Something tells me they wouldn't even bother replying to your emails and asking why you need the codes. They would more then likely ignore you.
I have never had to copy or clone my hard drive. If one day I wake up and boot my machine and everything just flat out disapears I guess I'm fucked. I'll take my chances and just simply run a "tight ship" and back up important stuff the traditional way. I'm only really using this machine to produce on and exchange emails, etc.
I guess I would just suggest to try and keep things simple when and if Ableton suppllies you with another response code.

I for one opened this thread because I read the title and thought "how could anyone complain about this?"

can't you just copy the unlock.cfg and back it up for future use?

so you restore more than once a month?
that sounds like a pain in the ass.
though I guess you're computer always run like new.... but then you have to authorize all your plugins constantly and put all your samples where they go and shtuff. sounds horrible.
