Interesting idea. Perhaps it could be an option per clip in # of beats/bars?

I love Live's auto-crossfades (and most of the time they work), but sometimes the fade isn't long enough. It would be great to be able to manually increase the fade length...

It could work something like this:

You click on a specified location somewhere at the boundary between two clips then drag up or down to increase/decrease the crossfade length. The cursor could change to an appropriate icon/symbol when you hover over the specified boundary location (just like the zooming in the ruler). This would be faster than any other program I've used (Logic, Pro Tools).

Also, right-clicking while hovering at the specified location could give the user a dropdown of predefined crossfade curves (like for the a/b crossfader in Live 6).

This has always seemed like a fine idea to me. Recently I've been wondering if Ableton might actually be actively opposed to it, since it abandons the concept of one clip playing per track?

YES!

Session view for me...the legato mode actuall crossfading instead of playing where the last clip started off would be sweet....nice for us improvising musicians creating drones..

The logical way would be this I guess:

If quantization value was 1 bar and you click play on another scene, the play starts to blink as normally, but instead of starting the new scene on 1, it would start fading out the previous scene and fading in the new scene. The crossfade would be complete withing the quantization value.
