Fair enough; looks like it is certainly favoured by the majority! I look forward to seeing what people cook up with it.

Even for those who are not too interested in it, I expect it might become an useful source of visual inspiration, rather than using the old "mental landscape" when trying to compose new pieces.

It's something I've always wanted fer sure. I'm not a DJ and don't make dance music or trance or whatever, but I think I'm one of a growing number of musicians who have seen the light as far as what Live can offer us.

I also do a fair bit of post-prod work & am getting into composing for film and, since Live is my #1 fave app for music, it all makes great sense.

I hope they improve the editing facilities in Arrangement though - right now DP and PT have the edge there. I also hope the QT window has the option of staying fixed whilst open ( unlike DP where it vanishes every time you mouse click another function. Hate that...)

movie scoring yes, but I have worked on somewhere in the range of 100 videos, mostly shorts and some documentary stuff and never used 5.1 surround.

So I am happy enough with what is there in Live 6

FWIW most movies are premixed & mixed in a proper film mixing 5.1 or 7.1
environment, certified by Dolby to translate into theatres correctly...
Monitoring in 5.1 while you write would be nice, but it is not a big concern
considering most of those film mixing stages have 5.1 reverbs etc worth
more than your entire setup... ie its not an issue that is going to stop
you creating your art, whereas a lack of video playback did..
I suspect people using Live for movie scoring will ask for more features in Live 7
of course they will, its called progress ;)
& thank jah we're discussing a company who are seriously progressive!
Esp compared to the majority who are more interested in working out how best
to limit the functionality of their entry level platforms so that you HAVE
to upgrade to get the tools you want/desire....

If you were to look back & somehow track it, just imagine the fckng awesome
audiovisual art that will be created purely by this one added feature!

The scratch 'n sniff plugin is next!

my question is this: Does 6, now with video, allow you to select frames/sub-frames as the timeline? This is a crucial feature needed to sync audio to video. If it is not included then you will have to adjust the tempo of whatever it is you are working on to juuuuuust the right amount, and may even have to fluctuate it a bit so that the audio lines up correctly, and the video functionality of Live will be crap.

and so Live became ... Vegas.

Can we have an "Acid" version of Live that is pure audio? Clearly many users want the video thing to develop further, thus it would be good to have video as an optional extra from the start.

1. You bring your laptop to a club to perform.
2. In live along with your music you have a video of yourself in the studio, a graphic of your website, anything.
3. Just send a video line out to the video system of the club while you play.

DUHH!!!! Good feature, usefull, important!

JEEZ

Live is supposed to be for LIVE PERFORMANCE so why do I need a "Save" function? I do everything on the fly as a good live performer should so why should I pay for this extra "Save" command that just sits there bloating my software needlessly. "Save" should be an optional plugin or at least Ableton should give us a stripped down version of the software called something like Ableton Ephemera.

the video feature is much welcomed around these parts, you know how useful it will be to us samplist out there, lots of good video samples and easy to get at them.

I didn't need this feature particularly, becuase I usually have another person doing my live visuals, and I use some other software for scoring. But I can see the day when it may be useful to me. And -- think about it -- there is no major DAW out there that doesn't support video in some shape. Acid has video playback, thumbnail view of frames and video rendering.

I think Robert's response was very convincing and should put this "debate" to rest.

To be honest I am sure it will be fun to play around with the video aspects of Live 6. I just was "debating" as I wouldn't really like to see a large percentage of new requests being delivered to enhance video in future Live upgrades as part of the core software rather than an option. Looks likely that this will become the case.

I might even pay to have the video if it starts to make sense for how I like to use Live, but I'd like to have the option all the same. I was happy to pay for Operator, I might pay for Sampler, and I might pay for, er "Projector" or whatever a separate video module might be called.

I take the enthusiasm from fellow esteemed Live users for video as good enough reason to be happy that we are getting what is in this release. Nuff said.

Haven't had a chance to play with this, but personally I'm totally in favour. I know some would disagree with this, but I'd like to see them develop this even further in the future (within reason - I agree that the bulk of development overheads should of course go on audio). If you could have video clips that behave just like audio clips, in both session and arrangement windows, I think that would be totally fantastic, and allow a whole new kind of multimedia work. I've been working on a Max patch that does kind of the same thing (ish), and having synced rhythmic sound and visuals rocks.

Have to say though, something like this probably should be a paid-for add-on (and I'd be happy to pay for it - happier than I will be to fork out for Sampler, I must say).

As processors get faster etc. I think really useful video functionality (ie not just being able to import a single clip to 'score' to) will get more common in audio apps. The new version of ProTools (HD only, sadly) looks like it might do this, though I haven't got my grubby mitts on that either yet.

Bring it on, I say!
