Okay Okay, the Mac is your platform of choice (mine too), but Michael came from the PC world. He has experience with Live on the PC before the Mac and made the COMPLETELY logical and appropriate assumption that Live wouold work just as well if not better on the Mac than the PC.

The fact is that it doesn't.

But it should. As mac users, we generally do not use cracked sofftware. EVERY windows user I know uses cracked or pirated software. EVERY ONE. Of course, I am sure that not every windows user in the world does this , but in Cincinnati, OH, San Diego, CA, Philly, PA, and NY, NY, every one *I* know who uses *windows* uses Live *illegaly* (these are the places I've lived in the US).

This means that we are paying for someone elses trip. They are getting a free ride at our expense. I like the new features in live 3, but on my 500mz Powerbook g4, I'm probably not going to be able to take advantage of the new effects, the new features, nor be able to use it Live , live. I actually bought the program to create live sets, and now its kind of turned into my main DAW so I love the program, but i'm still waiting for BASIC Mac improvements. With the new upgrade, that brings my investment in Live to $500.00 US dollars, and probably every mac users as well, and its been nearly a year or more of Mac users pleading, begging, banging their heads against the wall for features and performace that may not equal but approximate that of their Windows ccounterparts. After all this time and money, Ableton apparently has not implemented basic mac improvements, and their silence deffinetly gives the impressions that they do not want to immedietly deal with this issue.

I love Live. I work with its limitations, and focus on using it as efficiently as i can to free up CPU resources. However, it's not just about me. Michaels issues are important and his anger, is justified. Mac users need to put anger aside, and focus on getting Ableton to optimize the program for the Mac, specifically to prevent the kind of anger that Michael and Alex have. Again, their anger is justified, I'm not trying to tell them to not be angry.

Right now it has got to the point where many mac users are saying that yes we will pay for optimization, even though we really shouldn't have to after three upgrades. But we will. And Abletons response to this and an angry user base: silence.

It is a problem, not just for a few, but for all of us.

Okay, now I'm going to play with my MicroModular, program my MachineDrum, create a new patch on the V-synth, record into Live, and try to make some music. My overly long post for the month is out of the way!!

In closing my suggestion is that mac users show ableton in their post that even though they know that the optimised macs will still not compete with the pcs that they won't give them alot of grief for trying to upgrade the performance, alot of these stupid post are people making comments that don't have anything to do with music, like " you pc users bla blah blah wait
til mac optimization blahblah macs will kick pc butt blah blah"

That's what I mean

i've just read through most of the threads and posts regarding live 3. its pretty obvious a lot of people are going to be pissed off if altivec optimization doesn't happen, and are frustrated that ableton doesn't respond. well here's a way to get some attention. start a thread called "live 3 no altivec boycott!" or something. when they announce the beta testing...don't test. when live 3 is finally available for purchase...don't buy it. everyone who refuses to test/buy until altivec happens can sign their name to the thread. every signature equals 70 dollars that ableton DOESN'T have. this way ableton will be able to directly equate user dissatisfaction with dollars/pounds/euros/yen/drachmas/rupees/whatever.

i don't necessarily endorse this idea, i just thought of it and thought someone would get a kick out of making it happen...have fun!

I'm quite new to Live and I'm checking it out very seriously to eventually use it for live looping on stage (not what the software was designed for, but quite possible by some workaraounds). I was amazed to hear about the absent altivec optimization but if that is the way it is we have to live with it. I'm sure the Live team will get at it asap. Although I'm on Mac at my studio I am considering a P4 laptop for live work, not only for the SSE2 optimization in Live, but also since they are to be picked up extremely cheap thes days (accidents happen to computers when touring). With OSX there's no problems with hooking them up to exchange files.

ummm, actually it is tailored for live performance and looping, thats why its called live. don't let all the djs here fool ya, live is the most formidable and flexible live looping tool for instrumentalist out there--jam mans, loop stations, echoplexes, and boomerangs have nothing on Live. SO it is actually the number one live looping tool around (I've tried the rest, now i use the best), and there's no workarounds necessary. Work in the session view, get a midi foot controller (fcb 1010), and its just like hardware loopers--set quantization, program a midi patch on your footboard to start and stop clip recording, then all you do it hit the patch once to record, once to stop/loop. Set up the foot pedal for mulitple tracks, and then your ready for multiple loops. People like myself perform live with Live using basses, guitars, synths, midi drum controllers--the complexity and flexibility capable with Live is so far beyond any other looping tool its not even funny. Glad you found Live, you wil love it.

That is not a logical assumption, they are two different os', different processors and chipsets--everyone know that apple and pcs are different. So why is it logical to expect them to be the same--its not. Fact is, a lot of pcs are faster than most macs with most software, Live is probably a bit extreme in the difference between platforms, but they are different platforms after all. Personally, when i kick down $2000 + on a computer, I research the heck out of it and also think about my intended software and find out what it works best on--when i spend that much money, I make sure before hand I'm getting what i want and need.

And I don't know who you hang out with, but I'm getting sick of everyone saying every windows user pirates software --this simply isn't true, and its really annoying. Generalizations like that are what racism and bigotry are founded on--dissmissing a whole group of people based on your experience with a few. YOu don't know me, you don't know every windows user, so please don't speak for us.

Yup and what I found very cheap in this message is that he's using it has an excuse to justify a mac optimisation.

I have nothing against the mac optimisation but fair is fair and window users should get it too. It's not our fault if the Mac OS is an hard one to pump out juice from.
