as far as hardware compressors go....

i'll use a Distressor for lead synths, guitars, vocals, or any other lead element. Also good while tracking drum sets, it can really squash a room mic.

my 1176 gets used for bass (guitar and synth), and deep male vocals (ask Rahlo).

the RNLA's i'll use to tame secondary rhythmic elements (hand drums, and so on)

Focusrite Compounder gets used for kick drums

Drawmer DL241 floats around alot. Usually excells where the RNLA's/Compounder falls short, but i try to keep it off of bassey sounds. It just sucks the life out of the low end.

the TFPRO P10 sits usually on the drum mix, though occasionally on the main mix. Some of the optical modes are good for tracking as well though.

and my Gyraf SSL 4000 DIY clone thingie is usually on the main mix, or drum mix. interchangable with the TFPRO.

and as for software...
Metric Halo Channel Strip (both AU and +DSP) gets used everywhere on InTheBox mixes.
As does the URS Classic Console Strip.
Wave Arts Final Plug is handy for an extra dB or 2 of GR, but i try to use it sparingly.

it's the opposite of transparent.

complete piece of crap, but you can really make crazy popping transients with it.

+3, but also a vote for the SSL compressor - nice for squishing the shit out of tracks and getting that gritty distorted sound, but not much good for anything else.

geeeez adam, i really want to work at your studio. You're gear list is just so nice. How do you like dealing with the binding posts on your 1176 or is it a remake?
