DJing ain't exactly rocket science. It's all about playing somebody else's music.

Put on a decent track, wave your hands in the air, and the music does the rest.

IMO, lack of beatmatching is basically irrelevant to everyone except the other DJs in the crowd.
That is so wrong, as beatmatching is fundimental to synchronising tracks, which in turn produces a third [remix] track... produces a new sound... It is a cornerstone of playing dance, hip hop, etc, etc... Sadly forgotten are the days when a DJ performed [GrooveRider during the rave scene of 89,90,91,etc]...

I guess you never played/mixed/scratched so well that a crowd gathered around your booth to cheer, gasp, and a generally go mental... I wish I had that level of skill/talent....
were people dancing?
THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.
fatboy is awesome. I've seen people play the same music and have boring, aweful nights. I've also seen him play it, and watched people dance all night.
Sadly a large percentage of people tend to dance:
1. only if they know the record
2. only if they know the DJ
3. only if they are told to by the media
4. only if the event is high profile

myself, I always wanted to be educated...

I'll never understand why anyone cheers at someone playing a record of somebody else's music. IMO, it's mindless lemming hero worship. Or perhaps they're cheering the music, and not the person playing the records. I suppose it doesn't really matter, as long as everyone has a good time.

I don't have the talent to write original music, so I concentrate on sequencing and performing lighting, video, and live percussion to add to somebody else's music. As long as the crowd knows the song, I can get away with originality in video and lighting. I don't think it's so easy to DJ your own original music, though. I have a lot of respect for that do.

We're all different... I suppose that's a good thing!

a: they could/would be cheering the DJ's craft with the turntables [CD's, etc]
b: they could/would be cheering the choice of track...
c: a combination of both
d: or just off their heads

Sorry but from your comments I don't think you've seen a pro DJ in session [hiphop/house/etc], or understood what they are doing..? Or of how hard some skills are to learn...? I think you should check out a DJ championship or a quality club night before slagging them off...

"From wedding receptions and birthday parties, right through to corporate events and company parties" - not the same the planet...

People like FatBoy just add to the general misconception of what quality DJ's do...

FatBoySlim is a party - I saw him in Seattle and had a blast

He reminds me of AC/DC - all their songs sound the same and they're not the greatest band but they're hella fun to watch and the energy is second to none

Well, there's your problem. You're one of *those*.

It's true; if people are dancing that's what makes the promoter happy. Cause then they'll get thirstier and buy more beers.

At glasto' last year he gave out these psychadelic specs and had his decks set up right in the middle of a HUGE monitor.

If it wasn't so muddy i would have had the time of my life.
I was going to see FBS at glasto, but then we decided on Chemical Brothers and failed to get to the other side of the G-Stage where Hybrid were playing.

I personally like to hear tunes that challenge the mind a little, when a DJ plays whole tunes like FBS does i get bored of that tune.

Chemical bro's were doing a dj set and it sounded awful.

Hybrid - now that was skill Dj set, the two of them playing back to back, loads of other peoples tunes and loads of their own. Built the crowd up proper. No time for encores as they just carried on playing and playing until the organisers switched the power off.

They even played their really good another brick in the wall remix which was well cool.

DJ Surgeon was the other weekend highlight.

I beleive that if FBS wasnt FBS and he tried to make it as a DJ he would definatly FAIL.
