Bingo. As Adam said, you spent too much on RAM! Third-party RAM is like 1/3rd the price of RAM from Apple. Also, I don't need such a big internal drive.jamester wrote:I just configured a 15" Macbook Pro with 2 gig of RAM and Applecare and it comes to $3,248! (and it's not even Core2)the_planet wrote:Aargh! This $2300 is burning a hole in my pocket. Er, credit card!subterFUSE wrote:No Core 2 Duo in the MacBook Pro?

I've been waiting too damn long. Hurry up and give me a reason to give you my money, Apple!
Macs are real purty, but Apple can suck it charging out the ass like that....
I'm not arguing here, just relating the actual prices from the Apple Store.
First, the 2.16 15" Macbook Pro only comes with either a 100 or 120 gig HD. If I got the slower 5400 rpm drive, I'd save $100. But that's foolish for a music machine, so that extra $100 stays.
If I just get the minimum ram, 1 gig (512 x 2) I save $400. So that is substantial, now we're down to $2,848 - which is better BUT still need to buy the ram, and since I now have two 512 sticks I have to buy two new 1 gig sticks. How much would that be?
No matter how you slice it, it looks like it's about a $3K investment, and again this is still only Core Duo, not Core2. I'll wait and keep watching, maybe prices will come down with future revisions.
