[ot] MacBook Random Shut Down Horror

A guy I work with has just returned his macbook for repair. Random shutdowns and now it won't boot (claiming immediate kernel panic). Apple are replacing the logic board. The told him there's a new revision to the logic board that fixes a lot of problems and they are going to replace his with one of those.

Instead of opening it up I'd get Apple to repair it, you might get the new logic board revision.

whats this thread doing here?
I got called a troll a month ago for posting my macbook pro horror stories...
mine was also having kernel panics... and like all of them was shocking me through that stupid aluminum case(yes its stupid. aluminum is a conductor... computer parts have electrical frequencies that are not good for you... aluminum is dumb for a laptop case.. also.. it dents when you drop it.)
ahem.
what really cracks me up is that underneath that retarded aluminum shell is just a pc. how did they manage to f#@% that up?
I mean all the core duo pc laptops are doing fine... my toshiba m7 runs so much cooler and never crashes.. so what is apples problem? are they trying to screw this up?
one more... i can write on my screen and its very cool.
another... i get half the latency of firewire via cardbus and at lower cpu costs...
macs are retarded.

Well. given that the MBP is like a third the thickness of most PC laptops it's hardly surprising Apple are having engineering problems related to heat (hence the delay for C2D).

The aluminium shell is actually quite robust, better a dent than a crack in a cheap plastic case. The al doesn't help with heat at all though unfortunately.

...just got a mail back from my Apple dealer. I am still within this international warranty period and yes, it is the insulation of the heat sensor, and every Apple dealer worldwide will be able to fix it.
Good news i would say.

That's like saying "welcome to using ovens, they can easily burn you". A totally misleading approach to the problem. Apple should have done its homework and designed a computer that doesn't overheat and doesn't have "cables melting" that can cause "shot circuits". If it was a problem of intel processors, then between 80% and 90% of computer users would have random shutdowns, which is obvious is not the case, don't you think?

I feel for you guys. I hope apple fixes its problems, since i'm probably shopping for a new lappie next year

logic board? it's called MOTHERBOARD! you have a pc and that's the pc's motherboard!

It's referred to in all docs and by all Apple engineers as a logic board. This is an Apple *laptop* we're talking about here.

hey. it's not just a heatsink replacement, the new heatsinks have new connectors, so it's a heat sink and logic board. the old one's were not melting just triggering a shutdown do to extreme heat too early. if there really was a serious heat issue you'd rather it shutdown then catch fire or blow the chip.

the new boards have been available for about a week now but as they are new some of them are still in short supply.

about the hardware, they would like to differentaiate from pcs calling it magic logic board, but at the end, it's just a pc motherboard!

About the ads on apple.com, i have quicktime installed with it's auto updates enabled, but i only hear the audio, and quicktime comes up with some error about codecs, After reopening the apple ad quicktime crashed, and after internet explorer, i havn't had a iexplorer crash in a while, congratulations apple! you know how to make it turn(bad on pc)! lololol

Robert, I feel your pain...

I am currently on my fifth Macbook... Each one of the previous 4 machines developed terminal problems within 10 days of purchase, which meant I could elect for a replacement rather than a repair job...

Only my 3rd machine had the shutdown problem, but it seems that the quality control on the Macbooks has been almost non-existent...

After the 4th one died (within 24 hours of me getting it too, btw) my local Apple store passed on the case to Apple customer care, and their response was to have a machine specially built out of the latest revisions of all their parts, which I've been running for about a week now with no hassles...

But still, the immense inconvenience of going through 4 machines, when I needed a working laptop to meet some big deadlines, was really ridiculous... Hopefully you end up with a proper solution Robert...

That is absolutely rediculous. Apple better sort their shidt out as I'm not buying a replacement to this Powerbook until they do. I can't be the only one who feels like this surely.

I have been contemplating the jump from PC to MAC, but with all these user problems, it is definately making me "hold my horses."

Now I am reconsidering a PC laptop, but I think I will try to wait it all out until first quarter of 2007.
