I'm confused. Can someone verify either way please?

It is definitely only an editor. Possibly you can also use it to automate Evolver parameters in an easy way from you sequencer?
b0unce, I want you take back those

above and apologize...

I am still waiting to get some Email to pay for the software, seems it really does work as VST but of course you must have the hardware.
BTW. That desktop though "mono" is actually not just 2 but 3 dimensional, for real. since there are 4 oscilators you can do some chords and when you get into seq and delays you can get some surprising results. that`s why, like someone said, already no need for double poly since with 16 oscilators you really can make lots of "noise"

How can it be a VSTi if it doesn't at least have a USB connection?
Posted: Tue Sep 26, 2006 10:34 pm
by the last one
because it has a midi connection

What other hardware instruments are VSTi's utilising the midi port? I've never heard of that before but I hope it's possible.

Sorry this time Bounce I'm def. not taking the piss...
I actually looked over this hodgepodge site, vysor site and it makes no mention that this is just an editor for an actual Evolver hardware synth. It actually quite reads like it's a full blown VSTi in the tradional sense. It even lists system requirements and mentions standalone mode!
The idea behind this is great, although vysor could get the fuck sued out of them by Dave Smith for using the actual Evolver name and logo unless they paid for it although I doubt Dave Smith would sell the rights to a software version of the Evolver to these jackyls when he could do much better (stable) himself. I also like how vyson is planning to mimic every hardware synth that came out in the last 3 years, even the Roland Varios which is a mimic of software and hardware itself!!!!
I think a piss taker is a guy who writes "it can't be a VSTi if it dosen't have a usb port" not me.
Maybe I'm tired all day or just losing my mind but isn't this thing attempting do be a real deal standalone software version of an Evolver? I see no other reason to belive otherwise. Take another look for yourselves and tell me if I'm crazy. Just scroll down a second...

Um, the only such thing that acts like a VSTi AND is hardware generally shares a connection via usb. Examples of this are Roland's Varios, SH-201, Korg's Microx, and Clavias Nord G2 modular (which if I recall the first version a few years back was the first modular synth that was programmable/customizable through software...
Typicaly this is a new, great trend that provided it gets updated enough, and not totally abandoned, once companys like Roland and Korg move on to a new fad. The great thing about this is that you are able to edit on a 15" or bigger computer monitor and not have to squint to see a two line (or worse) lcd display on the actual hardware synth. Also, it's great to have control of this directly inside of your host application (Live, Logic or any other sequencer). Saves a lot of mousing around.
I personally still love a VSTi that operates both standalone and as a plug in in a host. I typiccaly play around in standalone mode for awhile before I do any actual recording just to get a feel for what the synth sounds like.
Before vsti was the norm, you would have to route all audio into a sequencer and record on the fly with something like Sound Studio or what have you. I sometimes catch myself still routing audio with a free utlity like soundflower into a program such as Sound Studio on habit alone. (I still use Ableton Live verion 2.0 and it dosen't support VSTi instruments.) That is what years of backwards working will do. It's the only option that was available a while back and it worked to produce a lot of great early tracks.
Basically Roland and Korgs needed to do something to make it more appealing to prospective buyers to still use CPUs but still buy hardware. The Roland Sh-201 is a pretty great product because of this. But damn ugly I have to admit...

Why would I be a piss taker on the above quote? How else will the external hardware communicate with a computer other than USB or Firewire?

Sorry, I thought you were kidding and considered ALL vsti's had to be hardware, with ports (usb, firewire or midi).
My bad.

No problem. I have an Evolver and it would be great if it could work as a VSTi.

Uh,
No one is getting sued here. The Psicraft team is working closely with Dave Smith on this editor. It is a tool based off the Midi Quest library engine. It offers full editing and library functions.
ALSO......
Since it is running on the Midi Quest 9 engine, it is capable to be ran as a VST instrument in your resident host. Everything you could do with your VST instrument you can do with the Evolver. It does this via the midi port and sysex. Automations, etc... You must pipe the audio into your host of course via the analog outputs.
This allows you to control the evolver as if it were an actual VST instrument, but instead of the audio being generated by a software app, it's acutally generated by the hardware Evolver. It is fancy gui slapped on top a lot of sysex control codes.
This app is useless to you w/o the hardware. IT is NOT a standalone instrument.

DOH!
Live doesnt support sysex...
unless its been introduced in live 6 ?

This works perfectly fine in the current version of ableton. It's handled through the VST code.
