i think this means vista will be a cpu hog. high cpu and ram usage is already reported by vista beta users and yet microsoft tells that vista will be more attractive than xp for the video and audio artists

Well, all those issues were resolved by RC1. So RC2 should be very nice (it comes out soon, 1 day or 2...).

Consumes about the same as XP does, but feels a little more responsive.

I like it for the DVD burning, and 5.1 DVD support.

I've never used 5.1 professionally, so it's no great loss to me.

I wonder how many audio apps will have problems with the move to Vista (and how many will make us pay for the upgrade to fix it?).

the creaziest thing about this story is that the H2O team spent almost a year to crack it. they had to make a dongle emulation to make it work. in the nfo file of this "release" H2O team stated that 70% of the Cubase code was a copy protection code. INSANE, they said and they pointed out exactly where was the bug in Steinberg's code. THEN H2O released a full compilation of songs where they were making fun out of Steinberg. and then they retired, like 'it's really not worth all the hussle'.
honestly, i have a full respect for what they did.

these days AIR team is kicking. just watch how fast they (or some other geeks) will crack Vista. i'm sure any copy protection can be broken. sooner or later.

don't get me wrong, i don't support them. i just pointed out the facts.

I wont support either, but the punk in me gets off picturing the faces on the execs over at steinberg, MS,... when finding out thier baby was cracked. All the efforts, all the wasted time and money, and the extra big price tag that users will spend on the product to fund steinbergs copy-protected ego. Nobody wins here except the cracks. Its a darn shame.

And dongles only piss off the legit users, that's what bugs me. I'm so glad Ableton didn't go this route. Heck, not afraid to admit that most of the people I know who use Live were using cracks and eventually ended up buying it anyway due to Ableton being so responsive and customer driven. That's the way it should be!

So far I've manage to avoid having the "Windows Genuine Advantage" update on my PC. After all I already know it's a genuine copy, and if it wasn't I'd hardly want that on it would I.

I wouldn't mind if it just checked once and then removed itself from your machine, but what is the point of it checking again the next day, and the next.... It's not as if my copy of windows is going to become "ungenuine" over night is it?

Reminds me of my good old Mac OS8.6 with Logic 5.0. The dongle
was using, cant remember the name but I believe it was ATP or sumthin.
A port that wasnt present on the G3 so you had to use a converter to usb.
This baby WAS checking constantly and not that rarely the program
lost connection to the dongle and quit immediately, no saving, nothing
bam.

It's a gray area this protection thing. DRM and Dongles only bugger
those who actually bought the stuff - not fair but thats a fact. With music
I wont ever buy a track filled with DRM. Fortunately my kind of music
is run by cool likeminded people - so no probs buying from beatport,
juno, traxsource and the likes.

Microsoft just released their ahem "ipod killer" called Zune. A player
that doesnt even support microsofts own protection scheme "playsforsure"
Some developers need to get more out, and maybe like talk to some
colleages. I'm frightend by protection from the really big ones.

IIRC the Syncrosoft dongle takes numerous calls from the SX application & it's calls are scripted from everywhere bar the audio engine. Surely a 'protection' method that takes up any machine cycles during runtime is nothing other than a punishment to the end user?

I am curious to see what happens with Vista. I honestly can't bother to read up on it all. I know that sooner or later I will either get stuck with it due to total lack of support for XP or I will just start using apple again. There is no point in stressing over it. To think that Vista wont get totaly hacked is a joke though. There is no bigger target. All the warez people in the world are waiting to get there hands on it just to crack it. I may be wrong but it seems to me that programs that run with dongles are not cracked as often. I have not been up on my warez for a while though, I try to stay off the crack.

Peace

So according to Reuters, Vista will have "enhanced" reduced functionality.

mmmmm, can't wait.
