Thanks longjohns - you are always so helpful in bringing the closest thing to a solution for many of these issues.

this is great to know as a sort of workaround.

It is, as anyone must admit, alas, a tedious hack rather than an actual solution.

But again thanks for putting it forward again.

(as a software design engineer, i am perplexed at how this seems to be such an insurmountable problem for Ableton to address. On the surface, there seems no reason to have to have such arcane file management for these sound libraries)

It seems to me that this means if you need tracks from your original library and from EIC in one piece, there's no way to do this with either of the above solutions unless one library is completely replicated in another, which rather defeats the point of having the libraries split over various drives?

You are WAY overestimating the importance of the Library.

In this case, the only thing which is special about the Library location is that it defines what is visible in the special Devices browser.

It has absolutely nothing to do with what sounds you can and cannot use in a set.

There are other aspects in which the Library location may be important. The one I can think of off hand is as a destination for imported samples. But that is a different issue.

I have taken the time to go into quite a bit of detail as to what is happening under the hood.

Do not confuse that with tedium in the actual process!

Seriously, if you forget about analyzing the folder structures which are created in that process, and just make yourself a bookmark in the Browser afterwards, you've added a total of about 30 seconds to how long it would take to install those EIC packs to the main Library.

The only added steps are changing location a total of twice, and creating the bookmark...

Ok I guess for the record I should clarify my posts above, because thinking this through and writing that other thread has changed my understanding

The only new feature in Live 7 is a handy quick way to switch libraries. Bookmarks for Libraries, in other words. (in prefs)

The only issue with controlling the install destination of a Live Pack is that an Ableton-created pack will install to the Library. So this can be controlled in any version of Live by choosing an appropriate library location prior to installing the pack.

The caveat being that you will get some extraneous folders created.
