Sampler is a different beast. Get that when you really need it.

How about this advice...
Buy Operator because I told you to, and because you already have a sampler which you may or may not already use (Its called Simpler
). If you are not able to make your own sounds in Op, then you can always just use hoffman2k's Covert Op Stuff. Thats a fantastic set of sounds from a great guy.
And just so you know, I was not telling you not to ask questions in my orginal reply, I just think that you should take everything said on this forum with a pinch of salt, that includes me telling you to "go and fuck yourself". There are people who say you must have this drum machine for this type of music, this synth if you make garage, this sampler if you make dnb, etc...its just not true and you might have wasted your money (You know yourself better than the general forum and know what is good for you).
I use Op, Simpler loads (And I bought Sampler, because it suits the way I work). I have not needed to use it loads though. So if its gotta be a live instrument maybe go for Op (otherwise there are alot of classic instruments out there you could get instead).

If I only had to get one, I also think it'd be sampler. Not only for the aforementioned ability to sample the operator while it runs in demo mode, but you can totally freak the sounds you already have into incredibly weird new ones if the spirit moves you!
You can't go wrong either way honestly, but until you can get the loot, sampler will give you a lot for your money. Have you seen Robert Henke's Sampler videos?

My two cents:
I have Sytrus, and I'm more and more impressed with it every day. To the point where I consider selling my Virus C and getting another computer just to run Sytrus on it with all its glory. It's a great synth, that I bought at an unbeatable group buy deal of $59 last year. With the free upgrades for life, it's a damn good investment that pays for itself over time.
So why all the talk of Sytrus? Because your collection of tools all inter-relate. Do you need FM and virtual analog? Do you sample a lot? Do you need a sampler that does multi-zone sampling, GIGA/Kontakt/AKAI import, with four LFOs fully integrated into Live so that you can create the coolest techno water drip sound glitched into Henke-esque grains of audio masturbation?
For me, the Sytrus is such a great hybrid of VA and FM, that it serves my needs. I find that I go to Operator for quicky basses, and the integration into Live, with Liveclips and other fun stuff is wonderful for synthesis. For me, Simpler is all the sampling I really need. If I need multi-samples, I can create a rack - yes it's more work, but I can use Simpler as a multi-sampler easily. I don't do a lot of that other deep sound design stuff. Also, I don't have $200 for Sampler. I also got Operator last year during Live 5, and I got it for $99, so another purchase I couldn't pass up.
Anyways, I'm long-winded, so I'll just leave you with this question: What do you do more of? Do you create sounds with synths, or do you do a shitload of sampling, and if the latter, can you get by with Simpler and Racks, or do you really need those new features of Sampler? For me, if it was a choice between Sampler and Operator and I already had Sytrus, I might get neither...but then again, those covert ops presets and Soundwrecks packs give Operator a whole new life. So I guess I'd get Operator.
