Question for those using MPC with Live
Great advice dudes. However, am I missing something here? Isnt' MPC's style of sequencing the same as Guru's? I thought it was - maybe i have the meaning of "step sequencer" fucked up? Thanks for the help...
Makes perfect sense, though, what you all said about using the MPC as a midi sequencer - that's essentially what I'd be doing by running Vsts from the 1K (since I'm not uploading sounds, but just triggering and midi sequencing). Makes sense....
Can someone clarify this "step sequencing" thing for me (I know, dumbass question). MPC's sequencing is same as Guru's?

Live 6, MV8800, Moog Phatty, Guru, KRK Rokit 5's
so what is it your friend likes so much about the unofficial 1k´s os? im confusedstale bread wrote:that's a good point see the 1000 has better slicing than the 4000, maybe the step editing that jj put in there is better than the 4000s too i don't know
but my friend who won't use anything but his 4000 wishes he had the 1ks os in it.
he's certified in protools and nuendo, uses logic as well, but loves his 4000 to death, he didn't want anything else until he saw jjs os.

step sequencing is inputing notes on a grid with your mouse or buttons, the mpc can do this not with a mouse but with buttons and dials, with guru you do it with your mouse.
but what the mpc and guru can also do is assign the pads to samples so that you input notes by hitting the pads with your hands. that is not step sequencing thats called realtime pattern playing/sample triggering.

another reason I recommend the mpc is that it will enhance your creativity alot, it will also enhance the whole spectrum of your music for instance if you
learn how to use it well it'll be like adding another pallette of colour and demension to your sound. when I make music using the mpc 'only' it sounds different than when I make music using it in combo with live, and differnt than when I just use Live, so see it's expanding my potential and giving me another avenue of musical growth.

he likes everything about it, he wanted to ask jj to do it for the 4000 but jj already posted that they wouldn't. with the 4000, he won't even use the internal slicing he uses recycle instead but the 1000s slicing is much better. he likes that alot. the only thing he doesn't like better about the 1000 os is that the 4000 automaticly moves to the next pad when you're doing things like assigning samples or whatever, but the 1000 ask you to choose the pad you want, its no biggy to me you just tap the pad you want and go. one of the greatest things about the jj os is that the developer is very responsive and adding what users want. It really seems like they're just getting started too but already they've blown the akai os out of the water and turned the 1000 into a mini 2500 and better in some cases.ikke wrote:so what is it your friend likes so much about the unofficial 1k´s os? im confusedstale bread wrote:that's a good point see the 1000 has better slicing than the 4000, maybe the step editing that jj put in there is better than the 4000s too i don't know

If you like step sequencing then there is only one solution-Yamaha RS 7000. only sequencer that allows you programming real time, using all your fingers simitanously, switching measures, changing velocities etc, etc. Anytjing else there -sampler, some, not too many usefull sounds-unless you like AWM yamaha sounds( which I hate)
Editing is also easier and faster then on any other hardware sequencer.
It is not better then MPC just different.( Akai is ideal for those who like physically/actually play) I wish it wasnt so bulky, would buy it just for that unique grid mode. Shame that Motif- having same sequencer does not have that grid mode.
Programming beats with that yamaha, ridiculously fast, i would do in 5 minutes what would take 1 hour with Logic, or Cubase. Also live editing is fantastic. WHile the music plays you can change resolutions and see/hear your HH or snares, add delete while hearing the music.

shit the rs7000 is dope, the midi fx the whole thing.........except the sample management. that shit drives me crazy, so slow, so convoluted, get a headache just trying to organize and name shit. the sampler itself is not that bad though. Yamaha has a beast right under their nose but they don't know it, if they streamlined the sample load/save and organizing, made it alot quicker and simpler to do it would be just very very sickening.. the combo of a great sampler and the rs sequencer/ interface is very disgusting indeed. you know now that i think about it that's a piece that's worth picking up again and using with Live.
thats what I love about this fuckin program it makes every other piece of hardware and software so much better. can you imagine leaving the samples in Live and controlling live with the rs7000s sequencer!!!

If you like to play out beats on the pads in real time then you should definitely check out the MPC. Make sure to try out note repeat, the sliders and the 16 steps function.ajstrax wrote:Good lookin' out Stale - that's what I thought, actually. I use trigger finger to trigger sound loaded into Guru, so I'm playing out the beats ( I never mouse click the notes in at all).
Most definitely NOT true. I agree it is a good instrument though(And why not use it just for midi sequencingrikhyray wrote:If you like step sequencing then there is only one solution-Yamaha RS 7000. only sequencer that allows you programming real time, using all your fingers simitanously, switching measures, changing velocities etc, etc.

no doubt kuniklo, the rm1x looks better and is smaller too, it's hard for me to buy something that doesn't sample though...I found that I need a piece to be able to sample for me to be able to use it all on it's own, then again I never want to use the rs to sample again in my life.... too bad cause it has a great sampler too. maybe i'll look into that rm1x... thanks mankuniklo wrote:You could also pick up a used Yamaha RM1x and just use it to sequence stuff in Live. Could not be further from the truth. There are VAST differences between the two sequencers. Really, it's almost herecy saying they're almost the same... the rm1x is good, but it's nowhere near the live sequencing instrument that the rs is.stale bread wrote:no doubt kuniklokuniklo wrote:You could also pick up a used Yamaha RM1x and just use it to sequence stuff in Live. Really? I thought the only significant differences were that the rs7000 doesn't require you to stop playback as much.Machinate wrote: Could not be further from the truth. What are the key differences? They seem almost identical from the manuals.
