I would like to be able to record all automation envelopes into clips live using mapped midi controllers. If we can draw the envelopes, why can't we use a controller to record them live. Seems crazy!

Please add this feature!

I just got this info from Nico at support. He said I could post it here -

>>

The problem is, that recording automation data into the session view
would conflict with the basic concept of Live to record all
changes/movements of a session into the arrangement. Another problem is,
that an automation envelope in the session view changes the values of a
controlled parameter relatively to the 'master value', whereas the
envelopes in the arrangement view will assign absolute values to a
device parameter.

> in the same way that midi pitch-bend can be recorded.

Please note that you record pitch-bend data through the normal Track In
- just as you record Midi notes. You can however record any controller
data into a session view clip through the Track In, but not mapped
remote control data. Map your pitchbend wheel to any device parameter
and try to record it now. This would give you the same results.

It would however be possible to create a 'dummy track' where you record
a clip with pure controller data and assign the output to a virtual Midi
driver (such as Midi-OX [PC] or the IAC driver [MAC]), which is then set
to act as a remote control input. But that's rather a confusing and
uncomfortable workaround.

version?

A feature to record automation data right into the session view is quite
on top of our internal wishlist, but it requires a profound
reprogramming of the whole Live engine. We currently cannot say if, how
and when such a feature could be implemented into Live.

When I first got Live it was because I assumed I could do this from session clips. Lesson ... You should never assume.
Come on ableton...we all want this sorted please.
exactly my case. I still can't believe it. It had to do that. it cripples live so much. I was so mad when I figured that. I keep wondering how come when you drag it from arrange view you loose all curves and you have to copy and paste them all one at a time. You cannot go more stupid than that on a computer.

the problem is that the abes seem stuck into their paradigms. they are not thinking out of the box much.

I am asking:

"the ones that found a real-world use for relative clips enveloppes in session view please raise your hands"

not too many I expect.

"the ones that are enormously bugged that we cannot record curves in session view raise your hands"

that must be a roomfull!!!!

Frustrating. I will email support and request it as a feature.

Does anyone else have an answer to another glaring feature obmission (coming from cubase).... Multiple Automation Lanes per Track ?? Why not?

I know space is probably the reason but with monitors getting very large these days... (I used to have 3 19"s, now 1 30")

Maybe if we all email support and ask for the features we want?

Also a bit strange, if you drag a clip from the track view to the session view all the automation is saved to the clip, but if you drag from the session view to the track view, the automation stays on the clip and doesn't go to the track view.

I discovered this when I wanted to interpolate values so that he effects 'slide' from one clip to the next but couldn't because it was trapped in the clip.

If i record some notes and automation from my midi controller that is mapped to vst instrument paramater it shows up fine on the arrange page but if i drag that to the session view the automation doesn't show up as an envelope! WTF.

we need this abes. everyone wants it.

There should be a button at every envelope, switching it to absolute when wanted.

This has been missing entirely too long...

There really is no excuse -

People expect to be able to work in a non-linear fashion and to be able to record their tweaks, it's just natural.

Yep. I was *very* disappointed to see this ignored for Live 6. If this isn't fixed in Live 7 I'm not sure I'll be upgrading.

you must be new to ableton. I got 0 requests added in the last 2 years.

like right now the crossfader is leaking audio, this is a major pita, and they do not even move on it.

I actually posted about this recently elsewhere. What I think is even more useful than, say, being able to control MIDI automation in clips is being able to drag material recorded in arrangement mode to session mode. So, if you do something really interesting with, say, a beat in arrangement, you can use that in session as a clip. As of now, the only way to do that is render the sample or flatten it.

It seems to me that one way the Abes could get around having to redesign the whole engine to add this feature is to have an intermediary function that essentially flattens the absolute and clip envelope values into a single value that can be read in clips.

Thus, if you have a clip with the volume boosted to +3db and then cut it by 2db in your arrangement, when you did this function, Live could create a new clip with a +1db volume.

Yeah I've never seen a post from an ableton employee in this forum (ever).
