That stings man...

Yeah, I do regret selling it every now and then. That feeling comes and goes in waves. When I'm packing up to go to a show or a gig (a rare occurance admittedly) I appreciate my new minimal setup - Also, there's no latency / sync issues, so everythings' tight with VSTs / Live soft-synths.

I have 3 very inexpensive modules...

Roland SC-7 Sound Canvas (super cheap)
Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas (nicer GM)
Yamaha TX-81Z

But I don't have these setup, as I don't have a dedicated "studio" due to lack of space. So I tend to use the synths in Reason, Live, Garageband and Logic Express, along with a couple freeware soft synths like Crystal.

Currently -

I try to use mostly only Ableton stuff + Zebra/Microtonic (although I have a ton of VSTs that I use from time to time).

But, I got a beat up Electribe ER1 for cheap (to sequence Impulse), and have found myself playing with it or the synth in my X-Station controller/soundcard more and more when I'm "Inbetween" things or my computer is being a Windoze P.O.S. (troubleshooting USB issues/crashing), or Live is being a pain in my ass (mostly missing samples).

So, I just scored a used Electribe ESX yesterday for (ES)X-Mas and I imagine I will noodle with it quite a bit.

I hate the idea of having to connect too much crap, troubleshooting bad cables/complex midi issues/backing up and loading hardware presets/hardware interface quirks, etc, so I imagine that my hardware setup will remain very small/cheap.

So - Currently -

Electribe ESX-1

Novation X-Station Synth

Electribe ER-1

Maybe in the future I will add a nice graphical synth module (MS2k, Novation KsRack, JP 8080, etc...) or an old midi sequencer (MMT, etc...), or a TX81z/DX-11 just cause I lurve FM.

I'm always oscillating between going all VST (this means for me SampleTank is best for what I do) or make music only with my beloved hardware.
I feel HW has a warmer sound, while sometimes not clear enough when compared to VSTs. Using HW has a side effect anyway: I do not like to mix down to two stereo tracks what comes from the modules, so I need time to record every track on a separate Live track, so I can process it by adding effects and audio modifications. This takes away a lot of time that I could use to make music instead. This loss of time it's the only reason pushing from wave to wave toward the usage of VSTs.

hardware: novation x station, emu emax (original), akai cd3000xl, akai s5000 (i know 3 of those are samplers but they are also clearly synths too).

I usually do not midi slave them to ableton (which runs on my laptop), I just use them to do exotic processing of wave files and just record the results in soundforge to be used in ableton.

Currently 2 hardware

Korg Triton Pro X
Moog Opus 3

both recorded into live audio only. I don't really sequence or sample on the triton these days. Live takes care of that now. Triton is used to program sounds, combination sounds, fx (kick arse fx section, i run almost everything audio through at least the onboard EQ or compressor)

Other synth needs are taken care of by free VSTi plugs.

I would like another analog. I have always wanted an arp.

i have a emu px-7 i can't let go even if i wanted to but the rest is software now with controllers and a old emu emax sampler. i sold my mp-7, akai mpc60II, korg kaoss pad, boss dr.5 and some other stuff.

hardware synths are my main sound source...also some soft one but the real stuff is simply fantastic...at least for me.
