my set up, which I really enjoy.
easy translation of mixes to other systems.
event TR-8n, (375USD)
KRK rocket10 sub( 199USD)
$ top self xlr cables for hookup (100USD)
get or build good quality, shielded cables.
this steps makes a big difference.
good luck.
PS if I was buying today. I would buy Genelc, or ADAM.

krk rp8's.
i got the pair for 400 new.. i love Guitar Center. Have worked amazingly well.
BX8's were my other choice and they were actually cheaper because they had more left over but they carried too much bass for monitors.
with krk's if they sound good on them, they'll sound good on just about everything whereas the bx8's will make some crap mastering sound relatively good.

I used to have Spirit Absolute 2's, not very good but all I could afford at the time
A while ago I bought a pair of Vifa Impuls speakers which is DIY speaker kit, ie you buy the components and build it yourself (I bought them second hand though so didn't have to build them myself) and they are really nice. They are good as hifi speakers but a lot of people recommend them for monitoring as well. They are passive speakers so I use them with a Rotel amp I got when I bought the Abolute 2's (really nice amp btw). The speakers cost me 300 euro's.
I use Genelec's at work and I'd say those are a bit more revealing but not as nice to listen to. Since I use my speakers as monitors as well as just music listening the Vifa's are perfect for me.
I think the general impression of DIY speakers like this is that you get more bang for your buck (not paying for brandnames like Mackie/Genelec) so if you're not afraid of building yourself (or getting them second hand) I'd say it's definitely worth checkin out. (ScanSpeak reference monitors are another custom build model that I always hear great things about but they are a bit more expensive than the Vifa's, about 1000 euro's for a pair)

hiya, query regarding the genelecs:
if one goes for the 8030a's plus the sub, then the freq response goes down to 29khz...but alone they are a bit light (59hz)
as for the 8040's genelec rates them to 48hz.
mackie rates the 824's to 39hz.
in the states on can get 2 mackies for about $50 more than 1 genelec 8040.
$1050 for a pair of mackie's. $1100 for one 8040a.
I agree that the genelec's are sweet, but pricey eh esp if one want serious bass thus perhaps the 8050 (to 58hz) is a more straight on comparison to the mackie 824 in terms of frequency range only.
am I missing something here?
(I think the original poster was looking for something in the $1200 range...a pair.)

satellite system: mbp 2016 2.7, live 10; RME babypro, Roland A-300 pro, Shure 1540's, Shure SM7B, Roland Cube, Refx N2, Nerve....
For me it has come down to these options, priced @ Sweetwater:
JBL LSR4328P $1400 pair
ADAM A7 $1000 pair
Dynaudio BM5A $1000 pair
Yamaha HS50M $400 pair
Samson Rubicon 5A $350 pair
Event ALP-5 $330 pair
I'll probably get a sub to go with. From what I've seen on the net, all of these seem to get good reviews all around. I'm not sure if the price jump from Samson Rubicon 5A to ADAM A7 is really worth it.
It's a tough call but damn I want to get some monitors quickly and get on with the music-making.

This is strange. Here in Europe, the single unit costs are:ayahuasca wrote:$1050 for a pair of mackie's. $1100 for one 8040a.
Mackie 824 = 511euro ($664)
Genelec 8040 = 680euro ($884)
(from www.thomann.de)
So, a bit of a difference but not double.
Anyway, these are both in my top list at the moment. I need to see the 8040s in the flesh as they look like $100 computer speakers in all pictures I have seen of them. I know this should not matter, but within reason – if they look awful, you don’t want to be looking at them for the next 10 years.
Obviously will also do as much listening as possible within the confines of a shop (Turnkey!)
See you,
Paul

Sold my Genelec 1030's and got the ADAM A-7's.
Have had them for just about six weeks and really like them. Very honest-no hype.
Some reviewers feel the bass is lacking/slightly sluggish. Compared to the 1030s they might be a tad less punchy but still sound tight I sure don't miss the fatigue from the 1030's. Two to three hours on the ADAMS and I'm fine. Genelecs got to me after about an hour.
Using them in a 10' x 15' home studio.

Re: monitors
I would keep the hifi and get additional monitors. It's nice to have the possibility to compare a mix that you made on your monitors with the sound it does on the hifi-system.Ken Ken wrote: ...but i was wondering whether or not my new active monitors in my music chamber will do just as good job for both my production and to run my decks, mixer through etc....?
Re: monitors
I recently got some Avantone MixCubes. Single, full range drivers, designed to sound shite (like a HiFi). Avantones are in lots of studios as they give an excallant reference to see what a mix will sound like on a hifi, car stereo, iPod etc. Only cost £130 so very cheap..pepezabala wrote:I would keep the hifi and get additional monitors. I keep reading comments Genelecs sounding aggressive and causing fatigue. Even the SoS Review by Paul White is rather critical of the Genelec sound.CR78 wrote:..I sure don't miss the fatigue from the 1030's. Two to three hours on the ADAMS and I'm fine. Genelecs got to me after about an hour.
I think its time for me to start pop along to some music stores..

it should be mentined that Genelec 8000 series are much improved over older models. they still have that Genelec sound but not as harsh as old versions. IMHO after testing many monitors I could say the Genelecs have the greatest stereo image of all, you have to hear it to believe it, others monitors next to it(Dynaudio, Mackie, Krk...et) sound real dull compared to the Genelec.punkdISCO wrote:I keep reading comments Genelecs sounding aggressive and causing fatigue.
