Estonia came -FIRST- out of 159 countries in the state of world liberty index in 2006.
"The State of World Liberty Index is a ranking of countries according to the degree of economic and personal freedoms which their citizens enjoy"

not only is it not a shithole in terms of economics & personal freedoms, but its a geographicaly & architecuraly beautiful place too....

When you have stolen my music, you will suffer my wrath!

 why don't you go get your self a soda pop kid!

And You are right, I have no right to bad mouth Estonia personally. That was uncalled for and I admit it. I am still quite mad over the outcome though!

Thanks to everyone for your feedback, I think we'll have to re-open the negotiations to either allow us to retain mechanical copyright or to see what sort of service that they're willing to offer in return for those rights.

You've all been great :D

i have recently had three tracks signed to a digital us label
they sent me a contract and each track was signed for a year with 50/50 sales
i also asked if my tracks were to be put on a compliation would i recieve any profit from that.
they said yes
so im happy.
i think the majority of digital label contract are the same
go for it.

I just learned recently that Kazaa, Scype, and the forthcoming Joost were all Estonian code creations. Cool!

Anyway, this thread is great. For the first time I there is label interest in a track I've done, so these questions are suddenly prominent in my mind. Are the rules much different if the track is going to be released on a compilation CD?

Well there are no 'rules'. They ask for the moon, and you can decide how much of it you are willing to give. Sometime you can be too stubborn and miss opportunities, sometimes you get taken advantage of.. And sometimes everyone is happy, and you make a few bucks.

My impression is that net labels are still pretty small time, so we are not talking about any great reward, so you have to decide if what they can offer has any real value to you.

I had an Estonian (though ethnically Russian) girlfriend some time ago. She was kind of crazy in a bad way, but super hot.

I hope you appreciate my invaluable input in these matters.

Honestly this sounds like the standard netlabel deal to me. All of the ones I've seen have been 50/50, and if they include a clause that says rights revert to you in 5 years, thats already better than most labels do. The whole point of 'signing' a track is that you are signing away your rights to it, that's the way it's always been. You get money, the label gets the rights.

For a netlabel, mechanical rates shouldn't even be an issue, or else they wouldn't be a 'net' label.

Honestly though, unless they are very well known and can guarantee you a certain number of copies sold based on past releases, you're almost better off doing it yourself. There's very little money in netlabel deals unless you're just huge, so personally I'd hang on to my rights. Hiring a lawyer is great advice, but to be hoenst it's doubtful you'll ever make enoljugh money on the release to even pay back a lawyer, so it doesn't help much.

Still, if this is the first time you are releasing something, it cna be worth signing just to get some experience here. Let's be honest, the odds of your first release being so huge that you get screwed by a label are VERY slim. Maybe give them a couple tracks to sstart out with and see how it goes. If they sell well, then at least you have some experience na d leveraging power when it comes time to renegotiate a new deal.

Or just give your tracks away like I do, then you don't even need to worry about this :)

Good luck, welcome to the sorta not so big time! :)
